Why don't ALL countries have gas and air?

The UK seems to be fairly unusual in using gas and air - why is this?

(If other countries had devised a pain-relief method that I wasn't allowed, I'd be really annoyed!)

Oh yes so would I.

I loved gas and air and wish you could buy tanks for home use.

do they have something else then or just more epidurals, use of pethidine etc?

I hated it, made my face feel all funny.

What's it like when you are feeling normal and not racked by labour pains wmf? (Can ask that now, knowing your sex!)

wheresmyfroggy Mon 09-May-05 21:52:51

Moondog it's quite trippy, you see trails and hear everything with an echo

moondog Mon 09-May-05 21:55:02

Sounds great..
Was scared it would freak me out like dope does (or rather did!) but that was the last thing on my mind when I did get it!

wheresmyfroggy Mon 09-May-05 21:56:21

oooooooh it's wierder than dope

moondog Mon 09-May-05 21:58:03

I'll have to have another one and see.. (not!)
Tries to get my dh to have a puff, but he demurred, saying he needed to be with it in case things went pear shaped (which didn't do much for my confidence..)

wheresmyfroggy Mon 09-May-05 21:59:39

He could have, it only lasts for about 30 seconds/a minute

moondog Mon 09-May-05 22:01:11

Better still! So even if it gives you the heebeegeebees, you know it will all be over soon!

wheresmyfroggy Mon 09-May-05 22:02:54

Exactly moondog, it's perfect

p.s heebeegeebiees! haven't heard that one for a while

moondog Mon 09-May-05 22:05:40

My DH used to be an ambulance driver in London and he says that on slow nights they'd all sit and pass around the gas and air like it was a spliff.

moondog Tue 10-May-05 13:07:03

mp,so that's why my fil (ambulance driver-retired) couldn't wait to get out of the house for work-according to my dh!!

I used to hang out with the med students when I was at Uni in NZ, and they regularly brought a tank along to parties - was always very entertaining!

I remember a med student friend of mine telling me a story about a woman on his obstetrics run who used the gas & air mouth piece thingy to hit her husband while yelling 'It's all your f*ing fault' - friend said he thought it had the same therapeutic effect as actually using the gas and air...

I always wondered if people used it recreationally and if so WHY NOT.

Fab fab fabulous stuff.

dinosaur Tue 10-May-05 17:10:48

I didn't like it. I did like pethidine though (but it had a terrible effect on DS1).
