Homebirth with independant midwife

How does a homebirth with an independant midwife work? Do they have gas and air? Are they able to transfer you to hospital if things get complicated?

Basically, what are the logistics?

A knee-jerk question due to being scared by watching 'Week In, Week Out'

Patiently awaiting my homebirth as we speak. Think the advantage of an IM is that they know you so well that they probably get a feeling for things not going right earlier on. I'm booked in at my local hospital anyway and they'll let the hospital know when I'm in labour so if we need to or want to transfer in then it should be quite smooth. Think it works the same as an NHS homebirth except that you know the midwives and they'll probably come out to you earlier just to reassure.
