ADVICE PLEASE! Those of you who had a 'show' - how did things progress???

BellaMummy · 01/04/2009 16:36

I am 38 + 4 with number 2, and have had two 'shows' today - one this morning and one this afternoon. Got some niggly dull aches occasionally and can feel the baby's head very low, but no contractions and my waters haven't gone. Are things likely to progress quickly, or does a 'show' not mean anything is imminent???

I was induced last time at 37 weeks with leaking waters and had a really quick labour, so haven't experienced natural labour starting. Just want to get on with it!!!

Any of your stories/experiences would be much appreciated.

I would get in touch with your midwife just to check with her. I had v fast labour with first baby and midwife advised me to go to hospital at first twinge. I did and they said I could hang around for a while but if nothing happened in three hours I should go home. I was cuddling DD2 less than two hours later!! give her a call!!!

I've had bits of show on and off over the last week or so , baby is engaged but nothing else. I'm 36+6. Its pretty normal to have a week or two before anything happens though for some
people it is the start of things kicking off

were they bloody? bloody is usually more of an indication of dilation and things getting going

you could call labour ward esp if you have had a quick labour before and have had a few niggles

but a show can happen days/weeks before the birth

They were both bloody and I did ring the delivery suite this morning and have a long chat to a midwife. She said it could be a sign of things starting but to wait for contractions or my waters to go. Labour was fast last time, but I was induced so not sure that was a good indication of how things will go this time. I would LOVE to think the baby would be in my arms in a few hours....that would be amazing!!

Was hoping lots of mnetters would tell me their stories of having a show and delivering the same day/next day!

i would say if your waters go, get straight to hopsitl, if you get the urge to push immediately , call an ambulance

if the contractions start picking up, get to hospital under your own steam, hopefully will be enough time to get there

good luck !

bloody show over about ten days on and off for me with ds1 and monster braxton hicks - i did ring the hospital once (we were on holiday lol - yes, a week before my due date - long story) to check if they could cope if i went into labour. i spent 5 days convinced i was about to burst at any second, but nothing happened until 12 hours after we got home when my waters went. bang on time lol.
wasn't imminent for me.

but you're definitely going to have a baby. soonish.

If the contractions kick off, or my waters go then I will definitely head to hospital (dh says sods law it will happen during the England match tonight ) but just wondering if people who've had shows found things got going quickly or it's usually just a sign something could happen within days.....

Got a show 11pm Sat, baby arrived 4am the FOLLOWING saturday morning.

Sorry, but then not as bad as madwoman. Got contractions starting shortly before the show but they just came at night times then went less in the day and never got less than 8 mins apart so the hosp kept telling me not to come (when I rang them umpteen times a night!!)

Every labour is different so it will take as long as it takes.

i'm sure there are sound psychological reasons why my body took so long - waited to get home etc although a little bit of me really wanted him to be born in the mountains in the snow. so beautiful
i had taken a bag with me lol. and a baby car seat. alas, not to be. he waited until new year's day and was given the star treatment as the new year's baby lol. been attention-seeking ever since. sigh.

i'd say the match was a reasonable target for you to have in mind though
good luck!

I had a bloody show last night and contractions/BH that were off the scale on the CTG but everything has slowed/stopped today. The midwife told me that it could still be weeks yet and that things can be more stop/start with a second if the baby engages/disengages especially if it is OP. It is so frustrating, isn't it?

I had a show on the Tuesday and has DS on the Saturday but that was by emergency c-section. If left to my own devices I recon it would have been more like the Sunday/Monday for actually giving birth.

So I guess just less than a week. Still not really what you wanted to hear though!

Good luck - I'm 37+5 and hoping to find a sign that things are imminent too.

Thanks for all the messages. Am going to try and lower my expectations of this being soon and fast.

Dh and MIL have been spoiling me - looking after dd and doing meals etc. so I have had lots of lovely baths/naps/walks. But if nothing happens MIL will go back home at the week-end and dh will be at work....and it will be be and my lively on my own again which is really tiring. She is a livewire at 2 and a half!

BellaMummy - I hope that I am too late in replying and that you have the baby in your arms now. But Yes I did have quick labours after a show. Well, sort of... 1st birth, had show 9am Friday morning, ds1 born 5pm Saturday. Second birth had no bloody show, but birth of dd took just 2.5hours after 4days of practice contractions. With ds2 I had bloody show midday on April 1st and he was born 7.30am April 2nd !!!!! He is a year old now!!!!! So I hope your shows produced a quick birth like I had a year ago.

Sorry forgot to say that labour was only 1.5 hours on April 2nd.

Am I too late to let you know? I had a show with babies 2 and 3 which was in the morning followed by that cramping that signals the start of labour later on that day (afternoon into evening so that by 10/11pm I knew it was the real thing). Those babies were born at 7am and 8am the following day after 5 and 2 hour official labours (ie from 2cm dilated to 10cm). So the signs were there and the labours were quite quick after the initial build-up where I knew during the course of the day that this was the Real McCoy. I have heard a show can precede labour by a good week however which is just as usual. Good luck.

Hope am too late in replying and OP has her baby in arms by now, but with DS2 had a show on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (just mucusy ones with tinge of pink) and went into labour on the Tuesday with waters breaking at 5.30 - contractions kicked in at 6.30 at already 5 mins or less apart lasting over 40 seconds and baby was in my arms just over 3 hours later. So yes, did have quick labour after a show (was induced with DS1 so had no idea what to expect - my induced labour was much quicker than expected too). Good luck OP.
