There is a scary post on here at the moment about stitches and pelvic floor...

Just wonderign if anyone didnt need any stitches first time around. And if not what do you attribute it to?

Frame/hips/shoe size/weight/ perenial massage???

had a lot of stitches so not talking from personal experience;

from what I read perineal massage can help, and trying to stay as active as possible during labour can help, and squatting when you are pushing, rather than lying down on a bed (don't think you can be very active with diamorphine/epidural tho) . oh and waterbirth can as well.

I've given birth 5 times and never had any stitches.

I'm fairly average build (shoe size 7) - never did any perineal massage.

I just did what the midwife told me .

i don't think that having lots of stitches necessarily means pelvic floor problems. if you are concerned about your pelvic floor (yes I know that's a daft way of putting it!!!) then make sure you do pfes now and after the birth.

My friend has had 5 kids and hasn't had stitches with any of them. First was 8lb something but the rest have all been big babies- think the second was nearly 12 or 13 lbs. She is fairly big but from what I can remember she has small feet. She pops them out like peas. She's into her essential oils and visualises each baby being born for weeks before the birth.

I didn't do this but did do the perennial massage for weeks before i had dd. I had stitches after a ventouse.

Another friend had a fairly rough first birth, ventouse and stitches. She decided to have the second at home, did the visualision thing and had a short labour and no stitches. SHe's very slim, average everything

I had a waterbirth, did exactly what the midwife told me and squatted to deliver (was never flat on my back at any point during labour - walked around a lot before I got in the pool and was up on my knees in the birthing pool for each contraction).

And I still had a second degree tear - but don't have pelvic floor problems. I think it's luck of the draw to a certain extent - DS was a fairly big baby (8lb 10oz) and I'm not a very big person, but I don't think that's necessarily anything to do with it.

Where's the scary post, she asked, nosily...

I've had 3 babies, no stitches.
Small/medium frame, small feet.
Babes medium/large 8-9 lbs.
Didn't do perenial [sp?] massage.
Did keep active during labour, and second two were waterbirths.

I didn't have stitches. Pushed for an hour and a half or something I think, (why can't I remeber that anymore?) Used almond oil to massage in. Did active birth classes. Once head was out all I did was pant and didn't stop till baby was out. No pain relief and was standing up. Baby was 7lb, 7oz.

No stitches with either of mine and I had two babies with larger than average head circumferences (DS2 was 39.5cms).

I have a medium frame, tiny hips, size 6 shoe, 60kgs and definitely went for perineal massage.

I also did what the midwife told me.

3 babies 3 lots of needlework - I'm sooooooooooo petite

mummytosteven · 15/04/2005 18:55

the unfortunate poster on that thread had a failed ventouse and then a forceps - instrumental deliveries tend to mean episiotomies which mean stitches
