I am 39 weeks and went for a routine appt with MW today - she felt bump and thought baby had gone from being head down to breech since last week.

Sent me for a scan - he is still head down.)phew!!)

She mentioned a manual turning procedure that they could do but it sounded really scary - I have never heard of this before what does it involve and is it preferable to try this before a section?

Extrenal Cephanic Version (ECV)

Basically they try and push the baby (by pushing your bump) round to being head down.

I have heard that it can make you quite sore and tender. If it was me (and I haven't read into the risks and concerns etc, which I would obviously do before comitting to a procedure) then I would deffo want to try this before going for surgery.

Still...you don't need to worry about it as you baby is still head down

Surely you mean External Cephalic (i.e. baby's head) Version!!!
I believe it is pretty uncomfortable but not compared to having your womb cut open and baby removed surely! Also implications for subsequent babies with a section. However, after ECV babies do have a habit of popping back again!

it all happened very quickly and I felt a sudden need for mumsnet whilst at the hospital as i needed to know opinions etc about the procedure but luckily (as you say) this was not necessary.

MW said that they give you a drug to relax the uterus which can make you panicky and make your heart race (this in itself worried me as I have had heart probs in the past)
