If i was to try gas and air and it made me sick how long would it take to get out of my system?

RubySlippers Wed 16-Jul-08 19:44:48

IIRC, it only has an effect whilst you are using it

I wasnt' sick with gas and air until they were actually born and were being weighed measured etc etc. I think your body just holds off until the job is done so to speak!

at least it did for me 3x
was only sick immediately after, it didn't linger

Entonox comes out of your system pretty quickly, almost as soon as you start breathing normal air. When you might stop feeling sick though is not something I know! sorry!

Ooooh, I love gas and air....

schneebly Wed 16-Jul-08 19:46:16

I believe it leaves your system just about as quick as you suck it in - that is the beauty of it! I loved the stuff and sucked on it soo hard that my throat dried out and I couldn't talk for days grin

dizzydixies Wed 16-Jul-08 19:49:38

snap scheebly am looking forward to it again grin

I love gas and air so much that I hurt my jaw with DS1 - my mouth was firmly clamped on and NOBODY was going to try and take it off me! A few days after the birth all was fine "down below" but my jaw was still sore. I spent my 2nd labour concentrating on not biting too hard on the mouthpiece!!!

I didn't have any drugs, and it didn't make me sick at all - just a bit "drunk". I was telling jokes, thought I was hilarious ...

I heart gas and air
my midwife came today and I put in a special order for EXTRA gas and air
with a cherry on the top

ButterflyMcQueen Wed 16-Jul-08 19:51:16

i cannot bear it - it is gone in minutes
i would rather have pain than that stuff and refused it this time in favour of.....well nothing!

FrannyandZooey Wed 16-Jul-08 19:51:44

oh and it stays in your system for long enough to make you look like a complete grinning fuckwit in your birth pictures, IME

so did everyone else's dh have a quick suck on it when the mmidwife was out of the room? grin mine did and we were like giggly teenagers (obv this was in early stages! grin)

dizzydixies Wed 16-Jul-08 19:55:51

schneebly my dh wouldn't do it - boring git - I think he was too freaked out by his junkie wife trying to offer him up a fix blushgrin

BigBadMousey Wed 16-Jul-08 20:04:57

I heart G&A too grin - think that is why I have had three children blush.

The very first time I took it it made me feel as though I was going to be sick but MW made me stick with it - I wasn't sick but I was soon hooked blush. I only felt ill for the first few breaths so I wonder if the whole sickness feeling might wear off it you kept inhaling hmm.

It can make you think you have an incredible sense of humour though - poor MWs!

It made my sister sick and as soon as she stopped taking it she no longer felt sick at all - It does get out of your system very quickly and I don't think the sickness feeling lingers for long.

i didn't cope well with it. i felt to out of control, and off my head.

scared me i am afraid, altho it was theonly pain relief i had. too late for epidural at that stage.

lou031205 Wed 16-Jul-08 20:14:32

I think that it lasts a cycle of blood around your body. I found that I would breathe very deeply on the G&A, and after 8 or 9 breaths, I would lose all muscle tone, etc, except my hearing. Over the next minute or so, I would gradually get sensation back first, followed by ability to talk, followed by ability to move. Just in time for the next contraction grin. I loved it.

lou031205 Wed 16-Jul-08 20:17:48

Oh yes, I definitely remember concentrating on my breathing, and the first thing to go was my muscle tone, but I remember the odd sensation of biting on the mouthpiece, then feeling it fall out of my mouth.

I don't drink alcohol at all, (bar obligatory sip of champagne for a toast), so I think it affected me quite profoundly. But I loved it, and didn't need other pain relief.

Now pethidine (2nd labour) - that is wierd stuff!

lollyheart Wed 16-Jul-08 21:20:57

ooops just have grin (make)

wasabipeanut Wed 16-Jul-08 21:24:04

Believe me lolly, making an idiot of yourself will be fairly low down your list of consideration wink

I loved gas and air - kept trying to get dh to take a lug but he wasn't having any of it.

Ceolas Wed 16-Jul-08 21:27:50

Love the stuff. Although I ran out during my last birth with about 30 mins to go! shock

I've used it for all four births and never felt sick. I really don't think it makes the pain any less, but you don't care about it as much.

divastrop Wed 16-Jul-08 21:30:06

my dh wouldnt have any either.i love G+A as well,i was denied it the first time and wasnt shown how to use it properly with dd1,but with ds2,dd2 and dd3 it was great, lovely stuff.i even made out my contractions were hurting when they werent so i could get it earlier with dd2grin

it never made me sick,or even feel sick, but it did give me a dry mouth which wasnt good as i drank too much water and they had to catheterise(sp?)me before i was able to deliver the placenta the last timeblush

twosofar Wed 16-Jul-08 21:56:07

Love it -if you are in labour in the morning it's even better. Like having a glass of wine at 8am... wrong, but terribly effective, much more so than a glass of wine at 8pm

MrsTittleMouse Wed 16-Jul-08 21:59:00

I did nothing for me. DD was big and back to back and the labour went on for ages and ages though, which probably didn't help. I was vomiting before I even tried it, so I have no idea if it would make me sick normally.
The midwife then left to use the loo and it did nothing for DH either. blush grin We actually wondered if the whole point was a combination of placebo and getting you to breath slowly, but from this thread it obviously works for a lot of people!
