What was your 2nd labour like compared to your 1st

hi all, im 35 + 4 along with second baby and wondering how this labour will compare to the first - which was generally fine as had no intervention, but crikey! how painful!!

For those tht went overdue (I went 10 days over) did u go ova with 2nd baby and by how much?

For those whose waters broke prior to labour did it break for 2nd labour?

Was the second baby bigger or smaller than first? (i had a 9 pounder!!)

Was the second labour quicker than first?

How long did it take you to push first time compared to second time?

So many questions!
Cheers!

Waters broke for both before labour ( were both posterior) Second labour was as painful as the first but much quicker(19 hours for the first and 6 for the second) and I felt more in control.

Pushing the first time was not an issue as I had an epidural and after attempting to push for about 1 hour (couldn't feel anything)they used ventouse then forceps. Second time was about 5 mins pushing.
Second baby a little bigger (3 oz more.)
One was born day before due date and the next on her due date.

Sounds like you had a fairly easy time the first time. I think most find the second easier.
Good luck!

DS1 was 40+5, DS2 41.

DS1 can't even remember them breaking, but it certainly wasn't before labour started, DS2 waters broke first.

DS1 was 7lb 15, DS2 8lb 10.

DS1 was 12 hour labour, DS2 was 2 hours.

DS1 pushed for 15 minutes, DS2 pushed for 4 minutes.

Both were induced, just with the gel, second labour was a completely different experience to the first, DS1 I had every drug going, can barely remember most of it, hated every second of it that I do remember! DS2 I would do his labour again in a heart beat, no drugs (well 4 puffs of G&A) I was in control, only thing I was worried about was that DH wasn't going to make it to the hospital in time, but he did, just.

Will let you know about DC3 in ooooooh about 30 weeks!

1st: waters broke spontaneously at 36 weeks, reasonable labour but found pushing hard (over an hour)
2nd : 2 days after due date, waters broken by consultant in hospital, very very easy birth, pushed about 10 mins. Dd (2nd) was bigger - not surprisingly as she was full term - but still under 7lbs.

DD1: hindwaters broke spontaneously at 39 weeks, went to hospital to have it checked out and found I was 4 cm dilated. All went well until pushing stage, which took 3.5 hours and DD1 (7lb 2 oz) was born with the help of forceps (ventouse failed). I ended up with 3rd degree tear. Labour was 10 hours in total.

DD2: was fantastic birth. She was born spontaneously at 36 weeks, weighed 6lb 1 oz, and second stage took 18 minutes. Waters broke just before she was born. Active labour was 7 hours, but had long early stage compared to the first.

Two fabulous home births. DC1 - one week early and 7 pounds 10; DC2 - two weeks early and 8 pounds 4

First birth lasted 15 hours from start to finish with the second stage lasting 20 minutes. Some waters broke spontaneously in early labour and MW broke hind waters later on. A little gas and air and small (but very inconveniently placed and therefore very painful!) tear.

Second birth lasted 6-ish hours although only forty minutes of difficult contractions. Second stage lasted four minutes. Waters broke about 20 minutes before dd was born. No time for any pain relief but no tear.

If I had a choice to do either one again, I'd go for birth one every time. The slower build up meant that I enjoyed it far more. The pace of the second left me very shocked and shaky. On the whole though - both amazing but very different.

DD1 was 7 days overdue. Total time of labour to birth was 8 hours. First part went fine, but after over 2 hours of pushing, had episiotomy and forceps.

DD2 was born 8 days early at home - unexpectedly! Labour started at 12.45 a.m. waters broke about half an hour later and dd2 was born at 2.45 a.m. Just used a TENS machine.

Dd2 was a pound lighter than dd1.

I would go through it all again - it was a fantastic experience.

Good luck.

DD was 1 week overdue, DS was 10 days overdue (after induction)

DD was posterior for the last few weeks, turned naturally during LONG prelabour and gave me triple contractions, so I had an epidural. Turning was slow because my hindwaters went first, so she had a kind of water cushion of forewaters to help her turn all the way round.

DS was only posterior once labour started, so I started getting triple contactions, and after NICE G&A I got another epidural. He didn't manage to turn naturally as my forewaters broke first, so I had a MW help him turn a bit more, but he still came out at an angle...

DD was 8 lb 5 oz, DS was 8 lb 11 oz

As both came out with an epidural, I was being monitored so MWs were telling me when to push but I could also feel contractions starting so I could push on cue without being told. I didn't feel an urge to push in the sense of needing to do a big poo, and with DS I honestly couldn't tell if anything was happening when I was lying on my side. I only felt progress when I was able to get up and push on my knees. With DD I gave birth on my left side.

Sorry, I do go on a bit.

DS1 induced at 37 weeks, 2 days for labour to get established and probably about 12 hours in "proper" labour. Waters broken by midwife in attempt to get things moving. Lots of drugs and an epidural but no stitches. 30 mins pushing. DS1 weighed 3.75kg.

DS2 arrived at 40 weeks after 4 hours of labour, 10 minutes pushing. No pain relief but stitches for a small tear. Waters broke during examination in labour. DS2 weighed 4.5 kg.

DS waters trickled not really broken. Easy labour lasting 8.5 hours, 45 minutes of pushing, weighing 8lb 8oz

DD waters broke after contractions started, VERY painful labour lasting 8.5 hours, 15 minutes to go from 3 to 10cm and push her out. She weighed 9lb 2 oz.

Both were born in the bath at home. After DS I said I do this again within 5 minutes of giving birth, DD never again was muttered alot!!

Basically exactly the same as the first but in half the time.

DD1 on time, DD2 a week early (DS 10 days over so no pattern I think)

Waters broke prior to labour with DD1 but quite well into labour with DD2

DD2 was 5 oz bigger than DD1 despite being a week early.

DD1 32 hour established, DD2 16 hour established

DD1 10 mins pushing, DD2 about 7 mins

Apparently the THIRD labour is the one that breaks all the rules. I read this a lot on MN a few weeks ago, then had DS who is our third - MN was right (again) .

DD waters broke in bed, contractions started 15 mins later. 30 mins of established labour then 3 pushes and dd was born. 45 mins in total!

Hi, I have had 4 children.

1st weighed 8lb 13 oz. She was 1 week over due and the labour was 17hrs (Hospital birth). Only had pethadin as pain relief but all it did was make me drowsy.

2nd weighed 7lb 6oz. She was 10 days over due and I was induced (Hospital Birth). The first attempt to induce me didnt work but the second attempt did and the labour was quick, 3hrs. No pain relief.

3rd weighed 7lb 6oz again (Hospital Birth). She was 3 days overdue and she was the quickest only 2hrs!!! No pain relief.

4th weighed 6lb 2oz (Home birth). One day overdue. Another quick birth, 3hrs. No pain relief.
I loved having a Home Birth, highly recommend it!
