homebirth assessment

Having assessment on Monday...are they evaluating me, baby or house? Know it sounds silly, but what does this usually entail?

Are you going to see a consultant?

Whta they usually do is check babies position to make sure it is head down, go through your notes and check your iron levels are good, BP is within normal range etc.

I refused to see the consultant but am still having a home birth.

Do you mean a midwife appt at your house?

Yes, I mean at my house. They're coming on Monday and said they'd do my 20 week check AND homebirth assessment...confused as to what that means. I haven't seen anyone but midwives so far and don't plan to change that unless LO has problems.

I didn't see anyone but community midwives throughout my pregnancy last yr, had homebirth (oh, did go to hosp for 20 wk scan).

I think about 34 weeks or so my midwife did a home visit. Did the usual antenatal checks and we talked about birth plans. DH was there too as felt it would be useful for him to meet her. I don't think they would be evaluating the house as such, we talked about where I intended to labour (downstairs in the living room) and what supplies I would need to get in (in some places they give you a homebirth pack, not here).

My mw may have been discreetly checking out that I didn't live in a hovel, who knows? .

Good luck with the appointment - is your mw being supportive?

The house is the least of things. They may want to know what rooms are where, but it is unlikely that naything will be prohibitive.

I've had 3 homebirths, and the first two didn't have a home assesement. With the thrid one, the midwife visited me and dropped off the labour pack. She then went through procedures with me, ie the kind of situations that would lead to them calling in for help from the hospital and also transferring to hospital. It was very reassuring.
