Newborn 8 week immunisations- what time of day is best?

Hello lovely mums. Our little one needs to get her 8 week vaccinations done next week. Currently we have an appointment booked at 4 pm but I have heard that some babies get very unsettled afterwards. Would you suggest it is better to book an appointment earlier in the day, or rather later in the day when she can then sleep it off in the evening? I have also heard that taking Calpol helps them get through it.

Thank you in advance!

I preferred earlier in the day so I was awake for any side effects. I think it's the meningitis vaccine they need Calpol for, 3 doses I think (1 dose every 4 hours) but check with the surgery/nurse.

We had ours in the morning and my daughter was sleepy all day and then had a normal night (maybe a bit more sleepy?). I guess it varies but that was our experience so would have been fine whatever time of day as she just slept. X

We were told 3 doses of calpol and I did the first straight after. I think others do just before.

Calpol is advised for the first set of jabs - just before you go and then two more doses later (the nurses at the clinic will advise and should give you a leaflet too)

Tbh at 8 weeks I don’t recall having much of a bedtime routine, they were just either asleep or awake randomly, so if you could go earlier in the day then that gives more “daytime time” to see if there’s an u settled reaction or not? Easier to call someone for advice at 2pm than 10pm.

My DS was zonked from the calpol and slept for hours after his 8 week jabs.

they give appts based on what suits the nurse’s working day, not what suits you

We did lunchtime, just before afternoon nap - but that was just what we were given

Did calpol 30 mins before, breastfed during and calpol later on

In my area, the nurse is there all day and you can choose a time. If baby gets a temperature, then it usually peaks 9 hours later. My daughter had hers at 11am and got a temperature bang on 8pm, which lasted around 3 hours, cue my all night stress. For the 16 weeks, she had jabs at 8am and got the temp at 5pm, gone by 8.30pm and a settled night.

@bluemonday2020 try the 4pm and if baby gets a temperature then ask to have the 16 week jab very to catch temperature early.

I'd say earlier in the day is better as you get chance to get the 3 doses of calpol in before bedtime so you dont need to wake them for it unless they are awake anyway

I wouldn’t panic either way, both of mine were fine. I think they both had theirs in the morning. It’s 3 doses of calpol every 4-6 hours post vaccine. Hope all goes well but don’t worry too much.
