Anyone had heavy bleeding DURING labour?

Unexpectedly pregnant with DC3 and am in a real panic about what happened with DC2.

I started bleeding quite heavily during labour and was rushed from the maternity suite to a consultant led ward. Once DC2 was born all was fine.

I am struggling with what caused the bleeding? My waters were broken and after that I dilated quickly. Could that have caused it? Was it a haemorrhage? And could I die if it happens again with DC3.

I can’t eat or sleep for worrying. I’m only 10 weeks pregnant so it’s going to be a long pregnancy if I can’t stop worrying.

We can’t possibly know what happened to you but your medical and birthing notes should. Ask for a call to discuss your previous labour and your concerns and how the situation will be addressed should it arise again.

Definitely ask for a debrief. They should talk you through it all. It’s actuality scary how little information we are given about what happens during our births unless we ask.

Yes, transferred from home to hospital with DC1 as midwives concerned with bleeding. All was OK, though. I also bled with DC2 in labour. It didn’t affect anything though. Not sure why it was.

Both times my waters broke naturally, but both labours were quick so could be speed of dilation I guess - do ask at your midwife appt and they’ll be able to review and hopefully reassure you.

It should be detailed in your maternity notes when you get them. I know they differentiate between old (brownish) blood and fresh (red) blood when you're in labour. It also depends on how much blood there is. I had an antepartum haemorrhage (where the placenta starts to detach too early) during my first labour and there seemed to be an awful lot of blood at the time but afterwards they said I had only lost a pint so I didn't even need a transfusion. It's definitely worth finding out whether the cause was identified because if you did have an antepartum haemorrhage then it's more likely with subsequent pregnancies. With my later pregnancies I was advised to come in to hospital if I had any bleeding at all because of the slightly increased risk of it happening again.

I didn’t have a transfusion or anything. Does this mean the bleeding was minimal? I was put on a drip thing.
DC2 was born 4 years ago. Is that too long ago to ask for a debrief?

The blood was red and seemed like a very heavy period more than anything else if that makes sense.

How would you describe 'heavy'? :)

I bled during labour, mine ended up like a period and it really concerned me but I asked the midwives, and they didnt batter an eyelid!

@BeautyAndTheBump1 it pretty much soaked the bed. The midwives seemed quite relaxed until they were wheeling me up to the consultant bit of the hospital. Maybe the hormones are sending me crazy and I don’t need to be as fearful as I am. It’s a hard one.

I had bleeding during labour and like you said was a bit like a heavy period if not a little bit heavier. I was told is was a bloody show and it was coming from my cervix due to dilating so quickly and not to panic, it stopped after about 15 mins x

I did with first pregnancy. Ended up with 4 units of blood and stay on itu. No one ever gave me a reason.
Pregnancy two should have been more of an issue as it was twins however I was fine. It was discussed due to a bleed in labour 1 they have a much lower freshold to convert to csection. It was never needed I delivered both twins vaginally.

I had bleeding during labour and I asked my midwife recently about it and she said it was possibly due to my cervix being irritated as I dilated fast.

As I started bleeding at home I went straight to doctor care on labour ward and no mentioned it again.
