Help me prep for scheduled c section friday

CucinaBreakfast · 01/10/2019 07:18

I'll be having my second dc on friday by scheduled c section. Had a protracted and difficult delivery with dc1 which ended in emcs, so my obstetrician wants to get this one out a bit early as it's back to back and not engaged at 38w.

This is obviously a little different to the first time given i know what's coming, but I can't remember what I need, any helpful tips would be great please!

I'll be fasting from midnight as my surgery is booked for 7.30am. I'll be in hospital for 4-5 nights.

Some questions:

  • What did you pack that was particularly useful?

  • What should i eat for my dinner the night before È›o ease the first bm?

My bag has:
  • maternity pads plus tena lady pants things similar to the ones i used last time
  • nursing bras, nursing pads, nipple cream, nursing pillow
  • comfy clothes that i can feed in that will sit over my scar (mat ones)
  • nighty that opens and dressing gown
  • flip flops
  • phone charger
  • toiletries
  • snacks - breakfast cereal and muesli bars
  • baby clothes, nappies, cotton wool, muslins
  • water bottle

Thanks all, much appreciated

Something to attach the phone charger to the bed, a cable tie or something. My phone kept dropping on the floor and I couldn’t get up to pick it up.
Fenugreek to help your milk come in?
If I had another section I’d bring a couple of cotton totes to tie to the bed to put things in so I didn’t have to get up to get them.

I was so bloated last time I reckon I'll need to sort out trapped wind pretty pronto

Peppermint tea worked for me.

Arnica tablets for bruising.
Vest tops as I was so hot and they worked well for feeding and snuggling.
Kindle with back light I was in a side room but DD did not sleep so helped me a lot.

I was quite wound up the night before and just had a baked potato. Something plain but to get food in me.

Good luck OP, hope all goes well for you.

Mine was an elective and I recovered well and without issue. I did enhanced recovery so was in shower within two hours. Up and walking that evening, slowly.

I had an EMCS and I had packed my own paracetamol and ibuprofen to self administer, as I knew realistically I would not get it promptly after asking. I just let the midwives know when I had took it & they were happy with this.

Hi can

Paracetamol and ibuprofen is a must. We had a cushion in the car that I could put between my scar and the seatbelt which really helped the journey home.

Amelia its in a private hospital so they tell you how long you'll be likely to stay in the maternity/postnatal ward. Just to get extra support, help and rest before heading back home.

(I'm not in the uk like i was for dc1 so it's not that fancy going private here, as health insurance is the norm)

A water bottle for easy drinking and snacks like dried fruit to help get you moving afterwards.
Lightweight clothes as hospitals are as hot as hell

I took some of those Windeze gel tablets in my bag and took them once I was in recovery- think they are breastfeeding safe if you intend to- I bf on them with no issues anyway!

I didn't get an ounce of the dreaded trapped wind and I actually get it fairly regularly in normal life so put it down to those.

Oh also start taking some sort of stool softener ASAP after recovery. I didn't go for 5 days due to the codeine but when I did it was absolutely fine

Black nightie (in case there's blood stains!) Some nice wipes for you as you might not shower immediately and can all get a bit gross after being in bed for ages

Second taking a pillow for the journey home!!

I had an elective with my daughter and just to add it was really a lovely experience. Calm and peaceful and I was home the next day and driving again 2 weeks later (you'll be sore and take it easy obviously, but just added as a lot of people like to tell you how hard a section recovery is in my experience!)

I have only had one section so can’t compare it with an emergency one, but I had a planned preterm section with vasa previa so was no where near labour. Compared with friends who were near labour the first two days after were harder for me as my uterus didn’t contract etc. Just something to be prepared for. Hopefully they are generous with the pain relief.

Best thing I took was a black towel. Quite hobbley after first shower and I dropped a lot of blood so was grateful a black towel was more discrete as I couldn’t really dry myself off.

I really enjoyed my planned c section and found recovery quick. Good luck!
