SIL is in labour in US of A with 29 week baby on the way....

She is American, db British, they live in Germany

Luckily, db is with her, as are her family. As waters have broken, I don't suppose there's much chance that baby is going to stay put for much longer

...don't what I'm hoping for really, just that everything will be OK...

wishing for a great outcome for your sil.

hi tissy

they might be able to stop her labour...or at least delay it, and give her steroids to help the baby;s lungs

29 weeks is early , obviously, but not neccesarily catastrophic

hope all is well xx

Peachy Sat 04-Aug-07 13:34:24

Sending lots of luck and prayers their way

tissy Sat 04-Aug-07 13:35:27

lulumama, all I have is an email from my father

apparently waters have broken, and they're "letting nature take it's course", whatever that means

lulumama Sat 04-Aug-07 13:37:27

oh ?

right, ok., have they gone to hospital? if so , there are things that can be done .

sending lots of positive vibes for their little one x

tissy Sat 04-Aug-07 13:38:03

yes, in hospital.

Peachy Sat 04-Aug-07 15:49:06

The trouble with del;aying a birth after waters have broken is ingfection, so they'll be very carefully weighing up the options and benefits, my gues 9and this happened to a friend) was that they'll get steroids in ASAP and monitor infection very closely over 24 hours or so, tthen allow to go ahead

however states ghave different rpocedures and this was some time ago

Is it definitely her waters?

Fingers crossed for your SIL and db, tissy.

Postive vibes flying across the pond as we speak

tissy Sat 04-Aug-07 16:18:28

don't have any more info, peachy, think it came from my db, who is at the sharp end, so probably.

Also, last i heard she had a low lying placenta, so don't know if they'll do a section if labour is progressing.

Don't want to's middle of the night over there...will just have to keep fingers crossed.

Budababe Sat 04-Aug-07 16:34:58

Fingers crossed that all goes well.

Odds are they will give her steroids to mature the lungs and delay labor with medication, but they could deliver the baby now and put him/her in the NICU.

Don't worry my cousin was born at 23 weeks and she's a perfect 15 year old now.

Thoughts are with them and you.

dd2 was born at 27 weeks - 16 months later absolutely fine. For what it's worth all the other 27 weekers and upwards in SCBU with her all left healthy and happy. It's a bit of a traumatic journey though! From what i read at the time 88% of 27 weekers survive so presumably the odds are even better for a 29 weeker. hth.

OK, so now I have a new niece!

3lb 2 oz at 29 weeks seems to be a good weight?

Apparently all is well at the moment

thanks for the positive vibes!

mears Sun 05-Aug-07 12:11:27

That is a good weight for 29 weeks. Baby will probably require ventilatory support at this gestation but usually do well. Progress can sometimes be 2 steps forward and 1 step back for a while. Expect baby to be in hospital till due date but in reality they often get home earlier than that. Once breathing is stabilised it is a growing game. Suck reflex doesn't usually establish till about 32-34 weeks mark so it takes a while to get feeding established. Densing your SIL and DB good vibes

tissy Sun 05-Aug-07 12:12:41

thanks, mears, that's encouraging!

mears Sun 05-Aug-07 12:35:44

Meant sending

tissy Sun 05-Aug-07 14:38:12

lulumama Sun 05-Aug-07 14:56:20

good news tissy...hope your niece thrives and stays well x

Budababe Sun 05-Aug-07 15:03:16

Oh well - let us know when she does!

tigerschick Sun 05-Aug-07 15:10:40

Oh - that is good news
I know twins born at 27 weeks, they are now fully fit 3 year olds.
Hope things continue to go well
