After some advice really. I was due with DC3 Yesterday. Previous children were born 41+1 and 40+3, I had no intervention with either of these and labour started spontaneously. Where I live we are offered sweeps at 8 days over and 11 days over. For various reasons I would rather not go as long as this and have asked for an early sweep. My midwife is reluctant, saying it's unlikely to work yet and risks just making me uncomfortable. She had said she will do it in the next day or two if I am adamant I want one but she would advise to wait. Just wondered what people's experiences were of having sweeps? Do they leave you in a lot of pain and have they worked? I've known of people have these from 38 weeks so confused why it wouldn't work at 40+. Thanks in advance

I had one at 39+4 (consultant agreed, think they just wanted to get me to leave as I was adamant I wanted one!). It hurt a lot but worked, had cramps from sweep till about 4 hours later when contractions started more regularly.

I will disclaimer with the fact that DS arrived via emcs due to failure to progress but I dint think that had to do with the sweep.

I had one at 40+5. It didn't hurt at all and I felt no discomfort at all (even the midwife who done it was surprised when I said it didn't hurt at all).

I'd been having contractions since the Tuesday afternoon and my sweep was 3pm on the Friday afternoon. The contractions started getting stronger and at 9pm I went to the birth centre. My waters were broken at 2am by the midwife and I gave birth at 6.58am on the Saturday morning.

I had two 1st 40+7 was fine, mild discomfort during but nothing after 2nd 40+9 this one was one a really hot day and I bled loads from it, threw up and fainted and it still did nothing. Id probably still have them next time though because I really hate being pregnant.

My midwife tried yesterday (40+4) but she couldn't because I wasn't fully effaced yet. Fingers crossed for another go on Friday. I feel pretty uncomfortable today as she tried all sorts (at my request) to get it to work!

I had a sweep at 40+3 about 11am and started contracting at about 4pm - baby was born at 12.46pm the following day! Mine barely hurt to be honest which I was pleasantly surprised about. I will say though that apparently my cervix was 'favourable' and I was 1cm dilated when I had the sweep so who knows if I would have gone into labour then anyway. Good luck, hope it works for you!

Thanks Nocturnal! A little boy. 8lbs1. First night home was exhausting, but cuddles make it so worthwhile.

I had three sweeps at 40+5 all on this day and next day baby was born. The first one wasn't so bad, second one very uncomfortable but the third one was horrific it was probably one of the most painful parts of the whole process tbh. The woman that did mine was being very rough I think

I had a sweep at 39+4 and had a show after about 6 hours .. my waters broke at 39+5 at 11:51pm .. DD was them born 1:31am 39+6.. didn't have any other symptoms no contractions or nothing until my waters broke.. I asked for early sweep due to hbp and just genuinely feeling exhausted and baby was measuring large.. I am now currently cuddling my bundle of joy in hospital whilst we are monitored❤️
