39+2 appointment to "talk" about induction

Hi everyone.
First baby and I have a consultant appointment tomorrow; I will be 39+2 to "talk" about induction - having this appointment a week early due to my consultant being away the following week.

What will the "talk" involve & could I ask for a sweep ?
Is she likely to just book me in to be induced ?

Why are they talking about induction? Just in case you go overdue, or is there another medical reason?

I have a heart condition... (only mild) I've got to have an epidural & I can only push for 1 hour. So I expressed my concerns to my consultant saying I don't want to go overdue, baby gets too big & I can't do it & end up having a c section ! ... which I don't want.

I’d imagine in that case they probably would want to book in an induction. They should talk you through all the different stages (pessary, drip, artificial rupture of membranes etc) and the risks involved. Good luck! Flowers

@TableforJane
Thank you for the info.
When would you think they would book me in ?
Is it likely to be this week.. next week ?!
I really need to get my arse in gear 🙈

If you agree to an induction they'll probably book you in for the next available slot. Or they might say it has to be after 40 weeks.

You do know that an induction raises your risk of a c section far more than the baby getting slightly bigger in the next couple of weeks don't you? Seeing as you say you want to avoid a section it seems a bit odd to be choosing the thing which most increases your risk of it..

Ooh okay so it can be quick then !

I am hoping for a sweep tomorrow, then if they don't induce me this week I have a midwife appointment on Monday and hope she will give me another sweep then to try & avoid medical induction.

There's new evidence that suggests you are less likely to have a c section if induced at 39 weeks, rather than waiting actually. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1800566
They may suggest that? Worth asking anyway and considering before you make any final decisions. Good luck!

@Moncwf
Thank you for that info !
All I know at the moment is I need to be monitored closely throughout my labour. So I'm guessing they may find it easier to induce me & monitor rather than let things happen naturally.
Hopefully I can get a sweep today & an induction date 🤞🏼

How did you get on?

@TableforJane
No induction booked but they said they will induce me at 41+5 anyway.
They offered me a sweep so I had that done, they said I am 1cm dilated & have a very thin cervix.
Was very crampy & sore back all evening but had worn off through the night.
Consultant has put in my notes that my midwife can give me another sweep on Monday at my 40 week appointment.
But they said she is well on the way by the looks of it 🤞🏼

That’s encouraging! Go for a walk today, keep that baby pressing down on your cervix. Good luck.

TMI but I've just lost my mucus plug exactly 24 hours after my sweep.
Sooo fingers crossed 🤞🏼 something is happening.
