So I am 40+5 with 5th baby and I went to the midwife for a sweep today and she said in 4cm already with bulging membranes. She said she would be surprised if I didn't have baby tonight or tomorrow but booked me in for induction for next week incase I don't deliver but said she would be surprised if I needed it. I'm trying to make plans now having my mum come over tonight to look after my other children but don't want to ask if now if it's not gonna happen today. I guess I just have to wait. Anyone else had a baby same day after being 4cm, bulging membranes and a sweep?

I don't think there is ever anything definite when it comes to babies and their arrival time (unless you have an ELCS and even then, the baby might turn up sooner).

Sorry, that sounded quite abrupt. I hope everything goes well and you aren't waiting too much longer.

Good luck op - I would get your mum round, keep moving, keep eating and try to relax - your body will do it when it's ready but i'd say it's best to be prepared and that way you can relax and be ready when it does really start rather than having to worry about childcare. Keep us posted - exciting stuff xxx

Thank you both

Yes my mum has come down
I will feel more relaxed knowing I have things prepared. I'm excited but nervous at the same time!

Difficult. You could have been 4cm for weeks... Good luck either way 😊

The only certain thing is it will be born ...sometime. Sorry, it's not helpful at all, but if you do have things lined up for the other children you are more likely to feel relaxed and in that 'calm safe maternal' vibe that is more conducive to labouring! (She says hopefully)

Thank you

I've had a few tightenings since and a lot of pressure down there as well. I just don't know at which point i should head to the hospital. The midwife said not to leave it too late but with my third I got only a few strong pains then waters broke and had her after being in hospital for only 18 minutes. I think this anxiety isn't helping.

I managed to sleep. Nothing happened since. Im getting a bit fed up now and wondering why I won't just go into labour...

You'll go into labour when you're ready. That could be today, tomorrow or the end of next week. Try not to wear yourself out with anticipation! Smile

Im just scared I'll need a c section. It's like body just stops and starts. With my 3rd at 41 weeks I was 4cm, bulging membranes and had a sweep then went into labour so I don't understand why this isn't progressing the same way.

I was 4cm on Boxing Day and had a sweep but DD wasn't born until the 28th.

That's good to know
I suppose when the midwife tells you that you will have baby in the next few hours and you don't it is disappointing. I just find it strange.

I think he's stubborn this baby

It's annoying when they say stuff like that. A midwife told me at 37 weeks that she was pretty sure I'd have the baby by the weekend, I was still baking her at 40 weeks, I had a second sweep that day, was 3cm, could stretch to 4cm, and also bulging membranes and I didn't go into labour until 40+5, allbeit a very quick labour but still.

Midwives aren't all knowing. It's not that they know and are right, they just got lucky.

On the Saturday I was told I wouldn't have had my baby by Monday. I had her Saturday night..

I know it's annoying when they tell you these things. Still no labour. If I have a full bladder I get a BH and then no more and if it have sex I get a few but then they stop. I don't understand why my body will not just progress. I'm worried value how safe it is him being in there this long. I'm 41 weeks today. My body has done it 4 times. First two my body went into labour 7 weeks early the with my last two I had them at 41 weeks but this time my body seems to just be failing

I know it's frustrating but try not to worry too much, a friend of mine was contracting since Sunday afternoon and baby only arrived on Thursday morning!

This is normal. Your body is not failing. This baby is just not ready to be born yet. Baby may not be in the best of positions yet, head might be slightly tilted, lots of reasons. Don't worry about it,

I had a sweep Thursday morning after already having had contractions for over 24 hours. MW told me I was 3cm and would have the baby by that evening.

She didn't make her appearance until Saturday afternoon.

I know it's hard not to get your hopes up but I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Take care of yourself and get plenty of rest if you can Flowers

Thanks again everyone

I've had contractions since 12:30 this afternoon after me and DH had sex (sorry TMI) and they are still happening. They do last slightly longer and produce a lot of pressure down there but they are not yet extremely painful so I will see how they go through the night. I've had at least 2-3 bowel movements tonight as well (sorry TMI lol) so I don't know. I just need to wait I think but just hope I am able to have a natural birth.

Can you be in slow labour still once you reach 4cm? I've had tightenings which I can feel in my back for two days now which I can cope with but not progressing to any stronger ones. Could I be dilating to 6cm slowly and not be in 'active labour'
