Childbirth

finding a hospital to give birth

Hi there,
We are moving back to the Uk shortly and I'm due in August. Trying to figure out the process for finding a hospital to give birth. Do I contact hospitals directly or do I need to be referred from Canada somehow? Tried to call maternity hospitals today and every number leads to a loop of pre recorded messages. So frustrating
Thanks Smile

When you get here you register with a drs practice and then would give birth at the nearest maternity unit - unless you decide to go privately

When you go to register with doctors tell the receptionist that you are pregnant and they will explain how you are referred to midwife in your area. Some times they ring midwife, or you need to see GP or you ring the midwife directly.

Your first appointment, your booking in appointment, lasts about and hour and they will ask you for your medical history and you and your partner's family medical history. After they ask your name and date of birth they will tell you about the places in your area that you can give birth, eg midwife lead units, hospitals or home and ask you to pick one. You can always change your mind later, assuming you are not 40 weeks already at this point.
