Thanks to everyone who reassured me that I'd done the right thing in complaining to St Thomas's about the community midwife who performed a sweep without my consent. I've just had a letter from Tommy's. Sounds as if they've gone into this very thoroughly and are ensuring this midwife is having extra training in informed consent and reviewing her practice, including procedures and documentation ?she was 'unable to recall the exact details'. And they are picking this up more widely in terms of department training. Success! They also passed on my positive feedback about other midwives I saw and general ante- and post-natal care. Feel quite sorry for the midwife now but hopefully this means other women won't be taken by surprise (was particularly concerned about the impact this sort of behaviour might have on anyone who had been the victim of abuse or assault, for instance).

wow eddm - well done!

I really admire you - I'm one of these irritating women that moans constantly and never does anything constructive about it!

Well done eddm. Do not feel sorry for the midwife - she will now be getting updated - something she should have been doing for herself but decided not to bother. You have probably prevented her from going on to upset and 'abuse' more women.

well done eddm - puts me to shame. I dearly wish I had complained about the mw who broke my waters without my consent during my first labour 3 years ago. I wasn?t prepared for the immediate pain and increase in contractions, couldn?t deal with it, became frightened etc. and the whole labour spiralled out of control. I still felt what she did was a form of abuse and it haunts me now after all that time. Good for you sticking up for your selves and looking out for future women under her care. More people should follow your example.
