How long does bleeding generally last after giving birth?

I had my baby 3 weeks ago. Bleeding seemed to reduce day by day, gradually going from red to pink to brown. Now it has gone bright red again, is this normal?

Perfectly normal, up to six weeks. Have you been overdoing things ? A couple of medical questions; does it smell offensive ? Do you have pain and or fever ? If so it could indicate an infection. What type of birth did you have ?

There is no smell, pain or fever. I had a forceps delivery.

I was told it could continue up to 6/8 weeks peaking and dropping along the way. I was just told to keep an eye out for clotting!

mine goes up and down depending on feeding habits of lo!

Well I would try to have a quiet day( if you can allowing for school runs etc) it's a wound like anywhere else on your body and it won't heal if it's jigging about (v. Technical term). If you feel well in yourself I would see how it goes. A bit of red blood is nothing to worry about, you shouldn't be needing to change pads more than every 2-3 hrs at this stage. Oh and congratulations :))

I had baby 5 weeks ago- this happened to me, especially as my physical activities increased/decreased. Kept thinking it was almost done then it would increase again!

Definitely contact your midwife if you're concerned eg fever, abdominal pain or feeling generally unwell.

I had forceps deliveries and bled for 6 weeks each time. The bleeding would increase and become a brighter red whenever I over exerted myself. Try to take it easy for a day or two to see if it subsides; if you're still not happy, speak to your midwife/GP.

Congratulations! Thanks

I am 7 weeks pp and still bleed. I have told my health visitor and gp and neither seems bothered and said it can take up to 8 weeks. Mine has stayed red the whole time and cant wait for it to finish.
