Is labouring really easier 2nd time round?

Weegiemum Mon 19-Aug-13 15:08:02

Much better for me.

Dd1 - 37 hours of excruciating back to back labour with augmentation, opiates, ventouse, 2nd degree tear with face-up 9lb12 baby girl!!

Ds - 10 hours from water breaking. Sniff of gas and air. Nae bother!

lastnightidreamt Mon 19-Aug-13 15:01:00

Half the time, almost exactly. Perhaps slightly more painful, but I would much rather that than hours more of it. Definitely a lot easier, all in all.

princesscupcakemummyb Mon 19-Aug-13 14:58:28

second was very easy contactions didnt bother me as much found it rather easy now expecting 3rd dc hoping its the same grin

peacefuleasyfeeling Thu 15-Aug-13 15:17:40

For me, yes. DD1 was really difficult and long (42 hours and just about every intervention going), whereas DD2 took less than 2 hours and no pain relief at all. But I was at home, and I think that helped me lots. And a bit of hypno birthing.

Having said that, my body is a mess after no 2! After DD1 I bounced back into shape within 2 weeks, but this time I've just been told I have diastasis recti, so that will take a while to sort out, and my baby weight is clinging on, whereas before it just sort of melted off really quickly.

Good luck!

Yes definitely for me. DD1 was a straightforward labour but pretty tough as with most 1st labours. DD2's birth was easier on so many levels, quicker, easier, less scary mentally, no stitches, etc. Several friends/family with more than ond say the same.

Goodbkuck OP.

This all sounds painful but quite positive! I am hoping to stay calm and go for vaginal birth after previous emergency c-section. Terrified of scar rupture during labour but am hopeful that labour second time could be so different from the first when I failed to progress. Would be interested to hear of any VBAC stories.

Liveinthepresent Wed 14-Aug-13 08:47:16

Yep way way easier here too!
Another one who didn't make it to hospital here - had no idea how progressed I was until it suddenly became rather obvious.
First labour not awful - average I think -12 hours total - pushed for over two hours. Second time I didn't actually need to push my body just did it.

First birth was painful, I felt really out of control and ended up having pain relief.
I really wanted a water birth first time around but didn't go through with it as I felt nervous.
Second time around I went ahead with my waterbirth.
I was just using paracetamol for pain relief until I got to hosp and used a little fas gas and air in the pool.
I was only in the hosp for an hour and a half and dc2 had arrived. I would go as far as saying I really enjoyed my second delivery.

Yes, like falling off a log (albeit a rather painfully).

Longfufu Wed 07-Aug-13 13:56:12

Not for me. I was trying for a vbac but it failed. Maybe I'm just not designed for childbirth.

lookout Wed 07-Aug-13 12:01:18

Much easier and quicker second time. A lot to do with being more aware about good birthing positions I think the second time. 10 hours first time, and 2 the second grin. Both were inductions though, I just made myself be more in control the second time around. Apart from being induced both times, they were both pretty straightforward labours though, and you never can tell smile. Good luck!

lovelychops Wed 07-Aug-13 12:00:01

My second labour was three hours from first contraction to DS being born.
My first labour was a four day drama fest.
Even though it hurt like mad, and at one point though I was going to give birth on the bedroom floor - I'd take second time over the first everyday.
Plus, with second you know what to expect and your body has done it before.

LaRegina Wed 07-Aug-13 11:59:54

Mine was definitely quicker - first was 6 hours, second was 30 minutes grin

ElliesWellies Wed 07-Aug-13 11:54:07

I found it much easier second time. Labours about same length in total, but second labour contractions were shorter and further apart throughout the whole thing, made it much easier to cope with.

MyNameIsAnAnagram Wed 07-Aug-13 09:30:34

Well we didn't make it as far as hospitalwink. Yes much easier and much quicker for me.

lollylaughs Wed 07-Aug-13 09:23:04

Second time much much easier. Had no pain relief, was all done and dusted in 90 minutes.

Having a newborn 2nd time round is much easier too....

Icedink Wed 07-Aug-13 08:38:11

Second time was so much easier, faster and less painful. I didn't realise I was in labour for quite a while and only called labour ward to shut dh up - up until that point I thought it was just braxton hicks but I was 5cm when the mw checked! It was actually a lovely experience and I stayed in control the whole time, it hurt but it was manageable which surprised me as with dc1 it felt like torture.

ElBombero Wed 07-Aug-13 08:16:44

This is all very reassuring!!! I'm shitting myself about it the labour a lot say its easier cos you know what to expect but that's what's making me anxious!!

ElBombero Wed 07-Aug-13 08:13:15

Grittizo just got that too so fingers crossed. Birth with DD1 was horrific

ElBombero Wed 07-Aug-13 08:12:04

Awww nomnew

NaturalBaby Tue 06-Aug-13 23:52:58

Not really for me, but I had a very thorough stretch and sweep with my 1st so things went pretty fast - 6 hrs from 1st contraction to baby out. 2nd baby was a longer build up and labour was about the same length but he flew out without pushing! I also had a nasty transition with ds2 but didn't notice it at all with ds1.

NandH Tue 06-Aug-13 23:45:55

Yes grin well it was for me, 2nd labour was only 2 hours and ds 'popped' out with no tears and I had no pain releif and I can say it honestly was fine!

With dc1 labour was odd and I done what I wad told ad she was 2 months premature, it was awful,

Dc2, I was already 10cm when I got to hosp, I laboured on my knees bent over the back of the bed which totally took the strain off my back, id highly recommend doing this to anyone smile

SupermansBigRedPants Tue 06-Aug-13 23:16:35

I spent my second labour chatting to leprechauns in their village aka high on gas and air, was induced but it was a really easy labour and I spent most of it talking shite amusing my birth partner and the midwife grin same length of time around 5-6 hours. I'm weird tho I enjoy labour!

Hashtagwhatever Tue 06-Aug-13 23:06:44

My 2nd was so easy, easiest of the four.

No pain relief needed was that easy.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Tue 06-Aug-13 23:02:59

For me, yes. Quicker and more straightforward. Hard to compare pain as one was very drugged instrumental and the other completely unmedicated. I'd say that the second I got all the pain out of the way in the labour IYSWIM - far less pain in the days and weeks that followed (stuff like brusing, stitches, etc).
