WWYD? I'm in early labour but booked in for ELCS in about 3 hours!

I am 41 weeks pregnant with dc2. Briefly, last time I was induced at 41+6, had several sweeps over the week prior to that, then had gel pessaries, waters broken, syntocinon drip over a 3 day period and eventually an EMCS due to FTP. Never got past 3cm.

Anyway this time I agreed I was happy to try for a VBAC but I didn't want any sort of induction at all. My strategy was that if I went into labour myself I had a better chance of it being successful and if not I would have the ELCS.

DH and I had totally given up on me going into labour and then typically yesterday I started having cramps and contractions. By 6pm they were every 7mins or so, lasting around 30/45 seconds. By 11pm they were every 4mins so labour ward told me to come in.

I had a show before I left home and then when they examined me I was only about 1cm dilated. Due to previous CS they kept me in and sent DH home. Still having v regular contractions, haven't slept at all and just about surviving on my tens machine.

Really don't know what to do now. On the one hand I would like to give the VBAC a go but they said it could still be hours/days before I am in established labour....if it ever happens. Really don't want a repeat of last time where we had no sleep for days and days and were quite traumatised.

We were psyched up for the CS and as the date had become so close had booked childcare for dd, booked DH's paternity leave etc. So waiting for days and potentially ending up with a CS anyway and then further days in hospital is not ideal.

Think they will examine me again around 8 or 9ish and see if I have dilated at all which will help in making a decision. But I really don't know what to do, help!

How's it all going? Been thinking of you this afternoon (I'm in Australia, hence the time difference)

Seriously, remember the nightmare of labouring for hours on syntocinon, getting back up on the bed to be examined and finding I hadn't progressed at all - so demoralising!

Hope things are moving quickly for you, or you've gone into theatre.

Hiya. I was booked in for an elcs after a back to back emcs with ds1 ( and we have absolutely had the real labour experience!), but went into labour 4 days before the set date. I briefly considered continuing naturally but decided that I KNEW what it felt like to recover from a cs, and thus time would be better as we wouldn't have the exhaustion and trauma of going through the natural way first. I made the right decision. We made sure we had lots of help with my 2 yo do I could recover safely. So, I'd go the planned route if I were you.
Good luck smile

Any news?

SunnyUpNorth Thu 27-Dec-12 16:16:50

Hi all,
Still in labour! Has been a bit of a nightmare, labour ward and the theatres were so busy so I kep getting pushed back as wasn't an emergency. Only got gas and air a couple of hours ago after saying I couldn't take it anymore and would just have the CS. Have also just had an epidural put in.

Waters broke on their own, was 4cm and fully effaced a few hours ago so going to be checked again soon and if no real progress will probably have the CS later this afternoon.

At least I know I really have given it my best shot regardless of how baby is born. Can't wait to hold it!

Thanks again for the support and messages.

Jacksmania Thu 27-Dec-12 16:21:20

Oh, the blessed epidural!!! Now you can relax a bit.
Please keep updating when you can smile

ElfOnTheShelf Thu 27-Dec-12 16:25:51

I was in the same position as you as I never dilated more than a fingernail and was in labour for hours days but once the epidural was in they induced me with such a force (unbeknown to me as the epidural was so good) that I opened very quick and had her within an hour. Perhaps ask them to do that and all the best.

Feels a bit jealous you'll be snuggling a baby in a few hours - aw smile

SunnyUpNorth Thu 27-Dec-12 17:17:59

Well just because we don't like to make things is now back to back and epidural hasn't quite taken everywhere!!
I am just topping up with the gas and air...I LOVE gas and air.

Jacksmania Thu 27-Dec-12 17:47:31

Oh man [eeek]

Just breathe through contractions - long slow breaths like you're trying to flutter a candle, not blow it out - and hope it's your turn for CS soon!

ElfOnTheShelf Thu 27-Dec-12 17:48:36

Yep DD was back to back hence why it was such a long prolonged labour apparently. I hope you have some joy soon.

Jacksmania Fri 28-Dec-12 05:41:18

Have we got a Baby Sunny yet?

Sunny is actually a really cute name for a girl smile

Melody3boys Fri 28-Dec-12 12:13:19

Oooooh just started reading this thread and I'm hooked!

All the best Sunny. I hope and pray you are cuddling that lovely newborn right now.

FWIW I had emcs with #1 then elcs with #2. By the time I was pregnant with #3 I wished I'd tried vbac with #2. (My options reduced with number 3 due to a lot of scar pain during pregnancy and the risks of rupture increasing).

Anyway, you're probably either now:
a) in theatre
b) well into established labour
c) cuddling your lovely baby and not caring two hoots about how he/she got here!

All the best. Let us know as soon as you can x

I am lying in bed snuggling my adorable new little son! He is so cute!

Finally had him at 6.30 this morning....naturally! Labour was quite long but I kept making just enough progress for them to convince me to carry on. Was convinced I'd still end up with a section until they checked me and I was 9cm and it suddenly dawned on me that I might have a natural birth. Ended up with a vontouse as he had turned back to back so every time I pushed him out a bit he popped back in. But it is amazing to think ill be discharged later today and be able to drive and lift my toddler etc. so very happy I stuck with it.

Thanks for all your messages.
