Childbirth

How likely is it that my second baby due in 4 weeks will weigh less than my first?

My dd weighed 9lb 5oz at birth and I'm struggling to find anyone whose second baby weighed less than their first (exculding premature babies).

I'm pretty sure that my baby will be heavier than my dd, I'm not worried just interested from a practical point of view - no point buying newborn clothes that only go up to 7lb 8oz if I'm looking at a 9lber plus baby!

Mine were both at 40 weeks and second one was a pound lighter (6lb8 and first was 7lb7) for no obvious reason. What does your MW say about size of baby? I know it's only an estimate but they should be able to point you in the direction of a tiddler or a whopper!

DS weighed 9lb 1oz, DD (22months younger) was 7lb 3oz. Nothing wrong with her, born at term, just small.

I was up at the hospital 3 times a week in the weeks leading up to her birth though, due to the hospital being convinced there was a problem with her growth. Turned out she was fine, and is still tiny now (in 9-12 month old clothes at 20 months).

Good luck with DC2. How much longer to you have to go?

Mine were both born pretty much at 40 weeks. Ds1 was 7lbs 8oz and ds2 was 6lbs 12oz. Also a friends second baby was smaller. So it does happen!

My second was also lighter than my first albeit also 3 weeks earlier (41wks and 38wks so both still full term).

10lb 1 and 8lb 8

DD2 was lighter than DD1 (7lb 13 to 8lb 8) but she was also 2 weeks earlier. Considering she was my smallest baby she did me the most damage! DS (9lb 1 at 42w) barely grazed me.

Messtins, I'm due 4 weeks on Friday. I'm quite tall and my bump is very compact, but it was the same with my dd and everyone was shocked that she was such a whopper because I was so tidy with her. I'm seeing my consultant this week so will ask him for his opinion but have resigned myself to the fact that this baby will be as big or bigger than dd!

DD1 was born at 39+3 and weighed 7lb 11oz. DD2 was born 2 years later at 38+6 and weighed a mere 6lb 6oz. No idea why she was so much smaller. Maybe I just ate less cake Grin

I'm watching this thread carefully. DD was 10lb 10oz and I need to know that should I decide to have another it won't necessarily be breaking any records.

DS1 - 42 weeks 9lbs
DS2 - 40 weeks 7lb 11

Mine were 7lb14oz, 8lb3oz and 7lb11oz in that order so not a lot between them really but the lightest was last. Really the middle one should've been the smallest given I was very ill the last two months with him and barely eating for the last month! Oh and everyone expected no.3 to be huge because my bump was massive (I'm very short) but actually he just came complete with swimming pool which duly flooded the delivery room!

DS was 8lb 6oz at 41+1, DD was 7lb 15oz at 40 weeks exactly. DD is fitting into up to 10lb new baby clothes without too much to spare, as did DS. I wouldn't go any smaller than that clothing wise!

I have 4 dc - my first (dd1 - 3.5kg) was the biggest & all the others (3.3kg, 3kg, 3.1kg) were born 2 weeks later than dd1 was.

I know a few people who have smaller subsequent babies but they have tended to be the 4th/5th/6th not the second.

Dd was 9lb6 born at 40+15 induced at 40+12 but she wouldn't move? I'm tall and a size 12, she was also long. Told ds would be 10lb easily, put on less weight, all bump for both but bump much bigger with him, ijnduced at 40+12 and he was a mere 8lb13!! He wore newborn clothes for a week but was too long for them. No idea about this one but will be amazed if not near the 9lb mark!!

Quite a few people I know, including myself have had smaller subsequent babies.

DD1 was 8lbs 7.5 and was 57cm long. She was massive to me - I'm small.
DD2 was 8lbs 3.5 and 54cm long. She seemed tiny in comparison but she did have a bigger head :o.

Ds1 was 7lb13. Consultant said second babies usually slightly larger, but girls usually slightly smaller (knew it was a girl from the scan) so expect the same weight to within a couple of oz. she was 6lb 12 little runty creature, I remember being slightly abashed that myself at 5ft10 and built like a Viking had given birth to such a wee thing when the girl next to me in the postnatal ward was about 5 ft, weighed about 7stone wet through and had a 10lb baby :0)

Ds1 at 40+10 was 8lb8oz, ds2 at 40+7 was 7lb 6oz. Dd at 40+5 was 7lb 8oz.
So yes subsequent children were littler.

Both of mine were full term.

DD1 was 8lbs 12.5 oz and when I was pregnant with DD2 I was told by the midwife and GP that she was going to be much bigger. There was lots of talk about gestational diabetes and needing to be induced. Neither of which happened and she was born at 7lbs 8oz.

When I went for my 6 wk check up the GP wobbled my belly and said "ah it wasn't all baby after all" Blush. I'm just working on losing the baby weight now DD2 is 15 yo Grin

DS full term 10lb 4oz, DD 38weeks 7lb14oz . I don't think she would been much bigger at 40 weeks

My dd was 7lb13.5 (11 days overdue) and my ds was 9lb11.5 (5 days overdue) They do have different fathers though, dd's father is 5foot 4 and skinny and his whole family are tiny, ds's father (my dh) is 6 foot so pretty sure that males a difference too. I asked the doctor and midwife after ds's birth whether they keep getting bigger (in case we decide to try for number 3 eventually) Both said that 2nd babies are usually bigger than 1st and 3rd babies are even bigger. Obviously that doesn't always happen though.
