Contraction pain in bum

A bit TMI I know...

When giving birth to DD I had an epidural at 3cm. I progressed well, but even after my epidural only one leg was numb and I was getting the most horrendous contractions---in my bum Blush. At the time my midwife said that was normal to feel Hmm. Now I am expecting DC2, I am seriously questioning: 1) if contractions in the bum are normal and 2) did the epidural work? Any experiences? I want to get it figured out before doing it all again as my consultant said he would refer me to an anethestist prior to giving birth for an assessment if in fact the epidural didn't work...

The day I went into labour with DD I had a really bad pain in my bum. It was like really bad trapped wind and I could not sit down properly. I managed to go to bed for a couple of hours and when it was time to go to hospital I had to go on all fours in the back seat ofcthe car as I could not sit down!!! I've heard this a few times from friends. Itctook them an age to get me on the bed to check my dilation too!

Thanks Sonia. It's nice to know one person experienced the same. Did you have an epidural?

Well I don't remember having pain in my bum but I had an epidural at around 3 cms also and mine only worked for one side of my body and if anything it was worse having one side pain free and one side still in a lot of pain.
The anesthetist came back in and jiggled the wire and it then worked entirely and I felt no pain at all

i did have pain in my lower back with my ds1, even after having epidural. it was cos he was back to back/op position and the epidural wasnt able to block it all out. not right down in the bum but like lower back/top of bum, if that is what you mean?

She was back to back but this was DEFINATELY bum pain, not back pain.

I felt my contractions really strongly in my rectum. DD was back to back, which may have contributed and apparently my rectum was fairly full Blush and the MW said that would certainly explain it. I do get a bit of rectal sensation when I have period cramps, though.

Mine was all in the rectum too. Midwife had said that baby was not back to back, but by the time we got to EMCS (failure to progress) she was, and when I saw the consultant yesterday (no. 2 due in 6 weeks) he said that it's not unheard of for midwifes to get the position wrong. I am glad to hear that others with back to back babies also had the bum contrcations! It gives me more hope for VBAC - if this one is facing the right way!

Ooh, also epidural didn't work at all. Consultant yesterday said that it often doesn't work with back to back babies. I had a referral to the anaethetist because my epidural didn't work, and he didn't mention this. And when I kept saying to the midwifes during labour that all the pressure was 'in my back passage' (I was trying to be polite!) none of them mentioned that I might have a back to back baby.

i had a back to back delivery with only gas and air ( my own fault was in complete denial about being in labour) - the pain was excruciating.
This doesnt help Op although my best friend had an epidural with a back to back birth and she found extremely painful too so I think that its gonna bloody hurt whateva you decide on

I had those bum pains with DD2, she was back to back. It bloody hurt. Was like getting a brush handle shoved up there. Well I'm only supposing as I've never actually had that done Grin

Every time I had a contraction I would shoot up off the chair!

I had a spinal tap and CS in the end though so don't know about an epidural.

Red hot poker up the bottom?

Yup, same here. I get rectal pain when ovulating too.

OP baby, moved as far as OT so that's probably something to do with it.

Banana87 yes I did. When we eventually got to hospital I was only 2cm but was in a lot of pain and not coping at all so they gave me one and it went. Ended up with a emcs though!

On the off chance any of you will get a message on this thread... have any of you ladies gone on to have more kiddies? And did you get the same rectal sensation?
I had this when I was in labour with my baby and it was excruciating.... the thought of going through this again puts me off!!
