My last hens all died because the wildfowl from next door's pond kept raiding their run, they got lice continuously and respiratory disease one after the other Sad.... so, moved new hens right to other side of garden and have a 15' x 9' covered run attached to their hen house plus a fenced off open run for scatching around in. So far so good. Have now got the bloody moorhens back INSIDE the covered run and even had one in the nest box yesterday!!! Any idea how to deter them? The climb fences, are as bold as vultures and the poor girls just huddle in the furthest spot away from them.... I would kill them if I could Angry

Blush forgot to say obviously they get into the enclosed run during the day, but if I leave it shut my girls will never get out.....

The moorhens must be coming in to eat the chicken food. They are hungry at this time of year.

I guess the obvious answer is to drape some garden netting over the open uncovered run. It doesn't cost much but you can get 10m x 3m stretches from Homebase.

Very good advice...the weather is making animals very hungry....so sorry to hear that your last hens died...lice can be nasty. I dust my coop with lice powder and red mite powder...it does help...

Have always seen moorhens as wild and mysterious - am Shock at moorhens as bold as vultures! Could you (would you want to) feed them while they are so hungry to keep them away from the chickens?
