Playing dead

The other morning we had a fox got into our chicken run. We are not really sure what happened, but the fox didn't catch any of the chickens, but one chicken was lying on its back making the most awful 'dying noise' - it was horrible. I thought it had been injured by the fox, but just when I was wondering what to do with her, she got up and was absolutely fine. Someone told me that chickens can play dead if they are scared. Does anyone know if this is true?

plenty of animals do play dead, and chickens aren't entirely stupid, so I would not be surprised.
