Car Seats for small car

Just wondering if any of you have any advice about putting a forward-facing car seat for children over one in the front passenger seat? I initially thought it was a really bad idea, but now I'm thinking that it probably isn't any more dangerous than putting the car seat on the back seat. Any expertise on this topic out there?
