Any tips on the best way to protect it for being checked in with our luggage?

I think padded in it's cardboard box best. I don't have the cardboard box and it's not ideal for travel so i use a padded car seat travel bag which has straps on so you can use it as a backpack and I additionally pad it out with packs of nappies, clothes, coats etc. I've rarely seen another car seat protected when we pick up the baggage always just the travel tag on the handle or harness Shock

Travel bag and lots of bubble wrap.

We just came back from Majorca, I took our Joie Stages seat to use in the taxi from the airport to resort and back again (the seat just sat in the hotel luggage storage room the whole time we were there!) and that's how I transported it. I had been saving the more 'industrial strength' bubble wrap that had come in the past couple of months with items we'd ordered online rather than using just the 'regular' thin stuff with small bubbles. You do need it, the piece that I had put along the front edge of the seat was popped when I opened the bag after we arrived home.

I was shocked too at seeing car seats being sent along the over-sized baggage conveyor with absolutely nothing to protect them, no bag or anything.

Oh and I lined the base of the bag with beach towels before I put the car seat in it.
