Car seat for 3yo

Dd1(3) is currently in a britax first class
Dd2(.8) in a carrier car seat

I'm trying to think about when dd2 outgrows her carrier seat. She is 23lb so not far off the weight limit and I know it might be a while but I wanted to start looking now for the best option

I'd thought about getting dd1 a new seat and passing the britax on to dd2? She's had it roughly 2 years now.

So what would I get dd1? A group 123? I don't think we'll get another year out of dd2 baby carrier to get dd1 into a 4-12yo seat.

Don't have a massive amount to spend but if it ticked all the boxes I could be flexible price wise.

Really wanted her in a full 5 point harness for as long as possible.

Any help? Tia Flowers

Your 3 year old is too small for a seat belted until at least 4
Your baby is too small for forward facing. Will she rear face in your britax first class?

What is your budget?

It doesn't go on age, it's about weight. How much does you DD1 weigh? A 5 point harness is only suitable to 18kg. A high back booster is suitable from 15kg. We have the Britax Evolva 123 which does have the 5 point harness and then converts to HBB

My DS is 3.4 and in a HBB because he was getting too tall for the group 1. He also weighs 18.5 kg so the group 1 is no longer safe

Argos have some group 1-2-3 atm which are Mamas & Papas, have 5-point harness until about 18 kg then can be used seatbelted, half price (there's always some half price...) So dd 3.3 is now in that and the Britax 1st Class can go. Is your Britax one that can rear face - that would be ideal but otherwise should be OK shortly for legality.

High back booster-only needs at least 15kg but a few are from 13kg - I agreed my parents could use one of those as felt there was more of a risk of them injuring themselves with the seat than from driving (about 10 minutes from station to their house, generally under 20 mph)

Mamababa both factors should be taken into consideration. However under 4s should be in booster seats. See link for full explaination

There are reported cases of not favourable outcomes. If weight limit reached before age 4 then one of two seats that harness til 25kg should be purchased. The britax advansafix or britax two way elite.

I would recommend the evolva or recaro young sport over mamas and papas one in Argos. Very poor quality. Mimimal crash testing.

My DD (3 tomorrow!) is in britax dual fix. DS (15 months) is still in carrier at 21ish lbs. he will remain in that for the foreseeable future until he's too big.

I imagine DD won't outgrow her seat for some while either, so will just get DS something similar/the same.

I think you should keep the baby in the carrier for a lot longer yet.

What sockmatcher said. (I'm sure I've said that before!)

My DS was 18kg before I was comfortable with him in a HBB so we've got a britax two way elite in one car and an advansafix in the other. Just because it's legal to have an 18kg 3 year old in a HBB doesn't mean it's the safest option. I prefer to go with the safest option.

And I would throughly recommend the britax advansafix. It's well worth the money. 5 point harness until 25kg then HBB until around 12 years (can't remember the weight, 36kg maybe). Fantastic seat.

Thank you all.
Dd2 can go in the britax 1st class which rear faces until 13(?)kg. We used it rear facing until dd1 was 2yo.
Dd1 is nearing the 18kg limit for 5point harness (must weigh her tomorrow) but ideally I want a seat that will 5 point harness her until 25kg then fit with 3pointbelt until 36kg. Any ideas?! Am I asking for too much - does it exist?!

Hi that's the Britax advanafix. However needs top tether Which many cars unless quite new don't have

Mama and Papa Pallas. Fixes with a block across the front of child at that age and then goes right up to 12.

If you want her in a full harness as long as possible try an erf seat like the Britax two way elite.

sockmatcher · 24/05/2015 21:34

I'd get a Britax two way elite. Then dd2 can use it afterwards and you can buy dd1 a dedicated booster.Which doesn't need to be overly expensive.

I have a 4 year old in a Britax Two Way and a 1 year old in the Britax First Class Plus (both rear facing). Why don't you put the baby in the First Class Plus rear facing and buy this seat for the older one:

shop.carseat.se/car-seats/britax-hi-way-ii.html

It is one of the safest seats on the market and when your baby grows out of the First Class Plus they could move into this.

The site above is great by the way and the owner Hakan is incredibly helpful and will email you right back and answer any questions. I found him much more helpful and knowledgeable than the UK sites I contacted.

Aha! Good plan - baby into 1st class and get a 2way elite for dd1 then pass that on to dd2when dd1 outgrows it!
Is the Incar safety place the only place to get an elite?

I'm not sure if it's the only place but I bought ours online from there Smile

Yes it's an exclusive import.

The 2 way elite is great - we have a quite tall 4 year old and a 2 year old both in 2WEs and they're fine in them

I would take a look at the Hi Way on the Swedish site before you go with the Two Way as I think it is a safer seat (it has a leg etc.) and otherwise is very similar.

The prices on the Swedish site are very competitive, including shipping the Hi Way cost around £215.

I will have a Two Way and a Hi Way in a week so can report back!

Isn't the britax maxway basically the hi way?

Report

Ignore that britax maxway much bugger apparently. Retails at £215

Report

We've got the maxway and friends have got the hiway - and neither of us would buy them again. They're just too tricky to install, and be confident they're installed correctly. In fact I'm not keen on dd using it once ds has grown out of it, so am gonna get her a different one. I really like the dualfix and was amazed how much room my nearly 4 year old had in it as it looks tiny! John Lewis have a few rear facing seats now. It's much better than a couple years back when we got ours shipped from Sweden.
