Hen's fucking teeth my friends.

Unless I want to pay £600 for a Britax special needs seat! Argh!

So, what does your 4 year old sit in?

I think some of the extended rearfacing ones are harnessed over 18kg and can do forward or rear facing. They're around £200, not cheap but better than £600?

the britax special needs seat doesn't have isofix

the britax 2 way elite is harnessed up to 25kg, and can be bought from the in car safety centre

sorry, it isn't isofix either though

at 4 mine were in a fairly basic booster seat with back and headrest. The car seat belt goes right over the seat and him. He was out of the 5 point by about 3.5 years

Thanks Bertie, I've looked at the Britax two way elite and I think that is indeed the closest to what I want. But I'd love more of a recline on it and of course I'd love isofix - but you are absolutely right - it's the closest.

X post - sorry, yes I've now come to the conclusion that I'm going to have to give up on the old isofix thing. Unless I get a ferofix type thing, preferably with recline, and get a crelling harness to use with it.

As I understand it there are no 5 point harnessed seats that will take 18kg+

This worries me as DS is 2.5yo, tall and already just over 17kg.

Hes going to hit 18kg before he is 4 and I dont feel comfortable putting him in a high backed booster with just a seat belt at possibly 2-3 years old.

ZeroFucksGiven · 03/07/2012 22:20

If your DS is already 4 why do you still need it to recline?

the klippan triofix says www.incarsafetycentre.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/30/products_id/228?osCsid=5oup9egvr81oov5g2jkbh3vpm0 here]] that it can be used forward facing up to 25kg, and it's isofix

not sure if that is harnessed though or whether you remove the harness and use the seatbelt

worth giving the in car safety centre a ring to ask about that one I reckon

He's not 4 yet, but is a super car sleeper and we do night journeys of 4 hours every 6 weeks or so.

The very vast majority are 18kg limit on the arness, which you then remove - but i am not happy with putting our fella in just car belt. But the 2 way elite and special needs ones are built dto be used with the harness up to 25kg.

Will have a look see at the link many thamks.

I spoke to them today Fu nily enough! They mentioned the 2 way and the traveller. Also, they told me about the harnesses you can buy for use with the britax hbb, didn't know about them, so another question!

have you considered the Kiddypro ones that are basically booster seats (not isofix) but have a cushion that goes in front of them and is secured with the seatbelt. DS has been in his since he was 1. It can recline, though not with the kid in it at the time. You can get them for up to 4 or up to 11 years old. They don't have an internal harness at all, the torso shield distributes the shock of an impact more evenly so there is less pressure on the neck.

still only harnessed to 18kg

yeah i'[ve looked at the harnesses for ds1 who has special needs.

my only concern with them is that you have to use them as well as the seatbelt. which means that if we had an accident it's extra things to be undone, and I'm guessing emergency services don't come across them that often and could waste time opening one buckle, trying to get child out, realising they're still strapped in, undoing the seat belt buckle...

Ah, I think the chap didn't mention that one as it has the leg, which we can't use in our stupid new car thanks to Underfloor storage...

Bed now, to dream about car seats and mangled toddler crash dummies.

TeaOneSugar · 03/07/2012 22:35

They'll just cut through the seatbelt and/or harness if someone needs to be out of a car quickly, plus the car seat and possibly the seat belts will need to be replaced after a serious crash anyway.

cfc · 03/07/2012 22:36

Fire brigade will cut no question so not worried about that! The safety cushions are only uo til 18kg too, where after that weight it's not proven safe. that's not to say it's not safe, just not proven safe. After 18kg it's belt across the child.

well cfc you could do what I did and order a seat from the US.
cost me a lot, and it's possibly illegal, but quite frankly i'd rather risk being illegal and have a live child!

The cushion is only supposed to be used up until 18kg. I've looked at that seat for DS2 who is 6 and about 23kg and has SN and is a real wriggler. A crelling harness certainly doesn't hold him in.

latch is similar to isofix but not exactly the same, and as far as I know can be used with our isofix fixing points

i can't remember if it reclines or not actually
