Car seats

keeping arms under the shoulder strap

DS is 27 months and big-he is 17kg naked so guess at 18kg when dressed and with shoes etc on. Just got him a Britax kid plus SICT which is a Which best buy, so should be safe, but he has worked out how to get his arm out form under the shoulder strap, which basically leaves him with just the waist strap. Does anyone have any suggestions on stopping this?
thanks

My DS did this, and we stop the car as soon as we can, get very cross and if we can- ie not on a CM run, we go home. Basically we read him the riot act, and make it very very clear that this is very very dangerous!

Like the little do- hickey posted above though.

I was recommended the afore mentioned Houdini Stop here on MN and its bloody brilliant.
So simple and it works.

I'm so pleased I clicked on this thread.
My DD is a little Houdini.
The strap looks brilliant Grin

Do you mean you have him in the highbacked booster seat already using the adult seat belt.

I think he's way too young. DS2 has just gone into the same seat. He was 4 last week and we still struggle with him taking his arm out. We do have a little foam gadget shaped like two Cs back to back which fits over the seatbelt so that it can't move but it can be pulled so that it doesn't work properly.

At 2, I really think you need a stage 3 seat with a harness rather than the seat you have. There are a couple on the market. Whether the seat is sutable is dependent on age as well as weight.

My 2 year old DD is in a harness seat, a recaro young expert plus.
She can get her arms out no matter how tight I pull the straps, she marks herself doing it, there seems to be no real reason for it other than she knows she can.

thanks for the replies-yes he is in the high backed booster-the houdini thing looks fab though, but we are past that stage at the moment. I'll see what I can find in terms of stage 3 seats with a harness

Britax Two Way Elite goes up to 25kg and has a harness. you can face if forwards or backwards (backwards is safer, but not in the front if you have an air bag). My 2 year old twins are in these rear-facing....

The only seats afaik in the uk which are harnessed past 18 kgs are the multi tech, rf only and the two way elite which is rear facing or ff.

I think it's naked weight they go on BTW - I don't know that clothes etc would weigh an extra kilo. (You could always try seeing if he would stand on your scales at home) So he should probably be fine in his stage 2 seat still. Looking at growth charts, if he's 17kg at 27 months it should be another 3 or 4 months until he's 18kg, and 3 or 4 months is potentially quite a big leap in understanding with this age group.
