Camping

Do any of you have to take two cars...?

Because we always do. 2 adults, 2-4 kids, depending on presence or absence of stepkids, one dog, normal array of camping gear. Even with 2 kids we can't get it into one car (neither car large.)

It can't just be us, can it? or do you all have roof boxes / trailers / massive estate cars / packing skills?

surely by the time you keep paying for petrol you could get a roofrack/trailer?

Blimey! Get a roof box or trailer! You'll save money.

No...if we go for a weekend we just take the car
We have a big boot though
For a week we take the roofbox as well
We have 2 kids

Get a roof box!

We're in a mindset of needing 2 cars when both stepkids are here anyway, for seating (not frequent enough to justify an mpv), so I suppose that's where we get it from, but I might get a roofbox for trips with 1-3 kids.

Am now blushing at my 2-car extravagances... We never drive more than 1 hr (peak district) or 2 hrs (lakes) though.

We thought about it last year when we bought a bigger tent and thought we might have to leave a child behind to accommodate it. In the end we hired a very big roof box.

It's probably cheaper in the long run to buy one, but big boxes are pricey and you have to be able to store them. The hire of the box was certainly cheaper than the extra fuel would have been.

We have a roofbox and a trailer. A word of warning though, we've found the trailer is like a handbag - the bigger it is the more stuff you take.

Thanks for the warning Surfermun. We're taking a trailer for the first time and I keep thinking "ooh we have room now so I can take xyz" will try not to get to extravagant.

My friends take two cars when they take both kids (the big one is 19). But they don't have very big cars or a roof box.

Estate car, roofbox and trailer. We still have to pack around ourselves inside the car cabin.
Dog takes up entire boot, we have two adults and three kids.

Last year we took two cars (one estate, one Punto) for two kids. But we did return with two tents after tent one leaked on night one.
