Camping

Quick Q - When you go camping, what do you and DP/DH do when the kids are in bed?

I mean for entertainment? DP and I are very much T.V/ Computer reliant that im at a loss of what were going to do on holiday whenwe go camping!

I know we can talk but i don't want to end up getting bored or DP getting bored.

Our kids are 2 and 4 so they will be going to be fairly early as they usually do.

What do you do with your partner when your children are in bed on camp?

No smut please - i am aware that we could shag like rabbits but i mean apart from that!

Lizzylou, why not? Our DC are very good sleepers

We also drink wine and chat to other campers, read and play cards.

Infact, you may find that it's easier to let your kids stay up a bit later - they will son start waking later too. Everything is much more relaxed when you are camping. Often it is hard to get them to sleep while it is still light and other children are out playing (learned this from bitter experience!)

So you may not have that much time on your own at night anyway!

Even when we had babies/toddlers etc we always went out to dinner around 7pm to 9pm, best if you have a restaurant on a beach or beside a safe playing area, so kids can run away and play between courses (hols in France so weather usu. still warm at this hour). Then we generally go down to the beach for the sunset and usually fly a kite. By the time we get back to tent it could be 10 or 11pm and the kids just fall into bed. We might read for a while, but go to bed not long after kids.

For your DP if he's very unwilling, you could buy/borrow a portable DVD player.

I let DS stay up as late as he wants when camping, and he's usually fast asleep by 8:30ish, and after a few glasses of wine and a chat, game of cards, reading, I'm ready to go to sleep by about ten pm anyway. Camping tires me out!

I'm a single parent but usually go cam[ping qith friends and we've never been bored yet!

On clear nights it's nice to just lie outside in sleeping bags looking at the stars (it's amazing how many shooting stars you see) chatting and drinking wine and eating chocolate.

Reading this thread, I now have visions of campsites full of campers shagging like rabbits under canvas as soon as all the children are in bed.

Put a sign on your tent "If the tents a'rocking, don't come a'knocking"

We usually play cards, read, have nibbles and wine, just chill and chat, talk to other campers. We're never up v late when camping and the children are up later anyway so it's never a long evening, esp if it's raining we like to go to bed and snuggle up all cosy
You could take a laptop and play dvd's if you have electric hookup.
Play silly games like consequences/20 questions etc.
I find it very refreshing to be without TV/computers for a week or two - you'll really enjoy it once you relax into it.

I think one of the nice things about going camping is having to find things to keep yourself and the kids entertained without resorting to the standard, switch on the tv.

Maybe try a wine & cheese board, start a conversation about something you've always wondered, read to each other, make lists (things you need to do... etc?)

I bet you'll have fun.

yep drink wine, eat cheese, chat (mind you we do struggle to get the dd's to bed at a reasonable time when camping - often not before 10 but then again they are / will be 6 and 9)

In fact I love just sitting chatting to dh outside the tent without the world getting in the way - roll on the summer.

We play monopoly if we're inside because it's raining or if there is no wind. Otherwise it's scrabble. As the wine bottles empty we get to the point where UNO is our limit mentally - at that point it's time for bed.

I sound so sad, but i can't drink as it makes me hungover just looking at a wine gum , but it does seem to be what all campers do !!!!!
DH wants a portable TV but I am dead against it as it is so nice to be away from it, plus DC learn to be without it.
My DD (5) and DS (2) are so drummed into a routine that even when camping their lastest time to go to bed would be 8.30pm! But they do wake up early too so I make the most of getting extra sleep whilst I can
