Can I camp nearish to Windsor and get away from the Heathrow noise?

We're thinking of doing England for our summer hols this year Windsor Castle, Hampton Court, Legoland, Kew Gardens, etc.

But lots of the campsite reviews on UK Camping mention noise from Heathrow being an issue. Or the M4!

How far from Heathrow do we need to go to avoid the noise? I don't mind the odd plane but don't want it to bother our holiday.

Is that at all possible in that area? Or am I looking for something which doesn't exist.

where are you from? we are not too far from windsor and see the planes but dont here them (you get used to it and ignore it) but when we go to mil, who is near kew gardens the plane noise does irritate me a bit as the planes are noisier and constant

Littleducks, we're in the far off exotic lands of Wales. We've decided to go abroad

then you prob will notice even noise! but for what you want to do windsor is a good base as you could themn get the train into london and use the tube etc

we stayed somewhere near henley in 2006 and it was a good base to explore from.we camped for a week and visited legoland(2 day pass) london, windsor castle.
certainly can't remember the aircraft noise...

At the risk of getting too technical there's a map here showing the noise contours. The worst areas are directly in line with the runways.

Was your campsite at Hurley, near the river chatee?

ChippyMinton - yes, we just looked on campsite uk and took the chance(knowing that we only wanted somewhere really to sleep and wash with disabled facilities)as we planned to only eat breakfast in the tent!!

would go again

Good map, thanks Chippy. I like it so much I've saved it to my favourites.

Chertsey & Laleham both have campsites by the river and not under the flightpath as already mentioned. Easy access to Windsor, Hampton Court, Legoland, London, Chessington World of Adventures & Thorpe Park (think cheap annual pass with your Tesco clubcard points)

Chattee - Hurley Riverside Park?

Rache, what was the name of the Chertsey one?

Off to check these places on Chippy's map

Basically they are opposite each other across the Thames.

Sometimes the flight path is changed due to unusual weather conditions but since concord disappeared I never hear the planes anymore!

Thanks CarGirl, that C&C Club one looks nice. Might be worth joining!

Still worried about the reviews on the Laleham one - maybe I'm worrying too much though.

I haven't stayed on either as I live very locally! I think it may depend on how much time you are actually going to spend on site? If you are going out all day every day will it matter?

Oh lordy, LOL, when's father's day? We're looking at the weekend of 15th June cos DS has the Friday and Monday off on Inset. DH has to go to Brussels on the Monday so being near Heathrow could be useful for that to.

We won't be doing too many theme parks, it's my birthday round then so days out for me will be Hampton Court etc. Sole concession to DS and DH will be Legoland, unless we go for longer. At the end of the day (as they say) will all depend on the weather! Fingers crossed.

Aha cargirl- yes advice on that please

DS's- will be 14 months (so irrelevant largely to this at least), 6, 8 and 9. Am thinking legoland for them but know DH would prefer Chessington- ??

Report
CarGirl · 01/02/2009 14:07

Unless you really want to look at Lego models there are more rides for all different ages at Chessington. Legoland gets very very very busy and if it's cold the water bit of legoland is no use.

You could send your DH to Thorpe one evening on his own to do all the big rides or you go and sit on the fake beach whilst he does them?
