Camping

camping... in particular, swimming!

I've been following lots of camping adventures in the threads and ours is coming up next week. Honestly though, have any of your children been swimming in the sea? I've been looking at buying wetsuits for the kids because I know that they are going to head to the water so they should be warm, right?? DD1 is no problem - I can get a decent thick wetsuit for her (12) but I can only find 1.5mm for the baby. This seems more like a UV / sun protection... and it's really her who I am worried about freezing.

What are you using... or what can you suggest I get for them? If anyone knows of any surf shops in London, I would love to know too. TIA

Depends where you're going. If it's that cold i wouldn't let them in the sea no matter what they were wearing....

I admit I am a wuss! I prefer my beaches gently sloping with comfy sunbeds and attractive french waiters bringing over a bucket of ice cold rose! That is probably also why I am really struggling to pay off my ginormous credit card bill...

It does sound great actually. I loved rockpools when i was a kid. We used to wander for hours with a bucket collecting winkles. It is so sad that the thought of dd doing same makes my blood run cold - obviously there would be freak waves and killer jellyfish etc etc

Ds (4) went surfing this summer and loved it. He had a wetsuit. Hardy dd(2) didn't but was more content to be on the beach in leggings and a tshirt anyway. Given it was Boden-on-Sea there were a lot of children wearing clam diggers and beach ponchos, if that's more your style.

I'm with Portofino... I would prefer sunshine and warmth but I am looking forward to our camping trip. We are heading to the Isle of Wight. I know that my kids will be in the water, regardless of the temp... dd2 is 17 months.

MMJ... where did you get your the wetsuits for your dc? Are they proper thick or the sort more suitable for the sun? I can't find proper wetsuits online for the smaller sizes... and I figure she won't be able to walk with her crotch around her knees if I buy a bigger size .

mine were in the sea last week and will be next week in their swimming costumes.

Is that bad?

They always sleep really well after!

I remember having to forcibly remove dd (18 months) from the water when her lips turned blue - she loves it!

Plenty of children's wetsuits on sale on holiday & even ones to hire on the beach. Whereabouts are you going?

or maybe here

thanks so much... I don't know why I didn't come up with any of these sites!!

We are going to Isle of Wight. Hubs suggested that we should get sorted before we go incase we can't find a suitable one there.
