How much wind is too much wind ???

The 5 day forecast has suddenly turned nasty Its forecasting rain and wind of 8mph then 12mph and then 20mph ! I'm assuming 8 is ok, but would 12 rattle the tent? And I guess by 20mph I want to be the hell out of there - what do you think?

I have same worry... if we don't camp this week we miss a family holiday this summer But don't want a miserable week and/or trashed tent

It'll be fine! As long as you are in the tent it won't fly away. It probably will rattle a bit, but hey, it's CAMPING.

Site your tent in as sheltered a spot as you can find. Make sure the guy ropes are very tight and you should be fine. Don't do as I once did and just throw the tent up and think 'ah, we don't really need to peg it down' because you find it's very cold sleeping in the car with no kit because it all blew into the river while you were at the pub .

I also ROFLed at title and was going to post 'depends how many cans of beans you had for tea' as a response PFNM!

Winds of 20mph will be fine, maybe a little rattly on your poles but peg down well an you'll be fine. Our tent recently endured 45 mile/hr winds, now that was scary!

I agree with heenipenni. 20 mph isn't too windy - they say it is equivalent to 'Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters.' We camped for a week in nearly continuous Force 6 - 'Large branches in motion; whistling heard in telegraph wires; umbrellas used with difficulty.' which was noisy but the tent survived.

I dosed up with red wine before bed - always does wonders for me.

Its not just the wind..

Its the state of the ground thats SO important.
If its soden than pegs will not hold and 15mph will blow any tent away!
If its dry then I would say that 30mph winds are no problem to most tents, 50mph for dome tents.

We've just got back - to be honest the wind wasn't too bad - it was the rain that put a dampener on things. Thanks for advice though all

Get delta pegs! You can't go wrong, they're more or less un-pull-outable as the harder the guy is pulled on, the deeper the spike embeds in the ground. You only need them at the key anchor point, so maybe 6 or 8 per family tent. They're about a quid each but you're buying peace of mind IMO. I'll try and find a link
