Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right topic to put this in, if not maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

We are looking to convert a van to a camper, has anyone done this before?
Any hints or tips?
Many thanks!

Sorry OP, we've not done this but I'd be interested in how you get on.

Are you planning on converting it yourself?

Yes we have done it. Go on Pinterest for ideas .

Yup. Transit high into camper. It's our second one and I dream of buying a bloody professionally converted T5

My advice have a clear idea why you're doing it, budget and don't need 50 cups of tea before breaking out the power tools

I have no desire to do this myself.

So why do I watch tons and tons of Youtube videos of other people doing it? Seriously, there are masses of people doing it and filming it. Horse boxes, stealth campers, eco ones, retro, whatever you could think of.

Good luck.

@Mysterian that's really interesting! I think there's a lot of vicarious campervan builders out there. What's the attraction? The idea of having one, or the actual building of one?

By the actual building, I mean the idea of building it, if you know what I mean!

We have converted our long wheel base crafter. In fact we are away next week in it. Best thing we ever did.

I'm an envious tent camper who'd love to be warmer in the evenings. A modern VW Camper is my first lottery win purchase.

Are you wanting to do the work yourself or get a professional conversion done?

I bought a panel van & had a part-conversion. I did a lot of research.

What are your plans?

There is a helpful FB group, google self build camper vans.

We tried, in the end the only bit DH did was the windows and they leaked! Mostly due to lack of time we took ours to a company in Shrewsbury who did the conversion for us and did a really good job. Loved it!

SBMCC has some good ideas , but Pintrest You tube etc are best.
Plenty of Facebook groups too.
I have often thought of doing it but its very time consuming in the end we bought one ready done with some damp issues and repaired it as we had repaired several damaged caravans it was easy.

If you can build it to a very high standard you should be able to build a van worth a lot more than the cost of building, on the other hand buy a damaged caravan and fit it in a van but it rarely looks right but a good usable camper can be built cheaply.

Do you have a tight budget?
I have seen some built for well under £2000 so its do able.
This nice bloke sadly now passed away has a build diary on his website, the family have kept the site going

We have done it. Bought a mini bus,as they already have the ei died and insulation in , removed the seats and converted it. Cost around £1000 for the inside we did do it ourselves
