European road trip in a campervan

Has anyone done this? I'm thinking ahead for next year, we have a VW T5 and i would love to take the kids (3 of them) on an adventure before they're too old.

I'd like to visit Scandinavia but I'm worried September will be too cold. Does anyone have any experience?

Also any blog recommendations of people that have done similar?

September will definitely be too cold, especially this year, so you should aim at going no later than August 20 in my opinion (and no earlier than 20 June). Not only because it might be cold but a lot of tourist activities are open only during that short period - mid June to mid August. At least Sweden will be filled to the brim with campervans, it's very popular.

Thanks for the info Alpha I had a feeling that might be the case. We have no set plans or route in mind but Sweden and Norway are places I've always wanted to visit.

Norway is beautiful. If you search for "nordlandsbanen minutt for minutt" (from Norway's equivalent of the BBC) you'll find a train that I'd love to take one day.

I did a trip once as a child to North Cape up over Finland, to Norway (and the cape, to look at the midnight sun) and back through Sweden, with lots of stops at tourist traps. That trip made an impression. We went over Jyväskylä and Tampere in Finland, up over Finnmark and back along the Swedish coast.

I'm not sure that a camper van is the best option, unless you particularly like to drive for extended periods of time, but some people like it a lot. You might want to have a look at combining hostels at 'Svenska Turistforeningen' tourist association with a rented car, express trains (intercity) and ferries both between islands and in the archipelago, and plane in and out of the country (countries). There are, well, to put it mildly there are a lot of pine trees and driving around in a camper van might perhaps be a bit boring.

I forgot to mention the North Cape tour took two full weeks.

We took our camper away for 9 months. We headed South for the autumn and winter. And then headed east for the spring. It was so much fun. We are saving up for a new van....
