What does everyone cook on nowadays?

Have a feeling it might be time to upgrade our cooking facilities. We inherited our current camping cooker from my DMIL and I'm terrified of it. It can't be long before it kills us all.

What do we choose though? Do we need a new gas cooker or something different? What do you cook on?

We have/use the choice of (not on every trip- depends on what we're doing):

*double gas burner with grill, using a big blue gas bottle. Have hardly used the grill, it's a bit rubbish.
*charcoal cobb
*single coleman gas burner
*slow cooker

Thanks prof for your suggestions. Not sure we've got room for more than one cooker per trip, but will have a look Smile

It's an homage to the DM journalists :o

The biolite thing is fab btw - with the grill attachment it makes lovely woodsmoke grilled burgers and chicken.

One of these <a class="break-all" href="//www.amazon.co.uk/Coleman-533-700E-Sportster-Stove/dp/B000QUIJOS?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21" rel="nofollow noindex" target="_blank">//www.amazon.co.uk/Coleman-533-700E-Sportster-Stove/dp/B000QUIJOS?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21 which is really fast and reliable, plus a little fold up Primus tripod thing as backup/ second hob.

Forgot to say Blush we also have a kelly kettle and I got DH the cook set for Christmas. Not tried the cook set yet, but it's another idea.

Depending on length of trip and number of people going I use one or more of the following:
Campinggaz two burner stove
It
One ring 'suitcase' stove
Portable BBQ
Campfire grill (for cooking over the fire)
Dutch oven (for cooking in the fire)

We are just back and I used for the first time an electric pan thingy - sorry can't remember what it's called and can't link on phone. Its like a big paella pan with a lid that runs on elec - we always have ehu. It was great, got hot quickly, easy to clean and large. I brought a bag of cooked mince and just chucked it in , dinner in 5 mins.

For hot water and stuff done in a sauce pan we used a suitcase burner.

We also have a portable bbq and a slow cooker - depends on length of trip and location as to what we take.

I did want a Cobb but my little dc aren't good at waiting for food!

I have a 1 ring suitcase stove and a portable BBQ.

I'd love a biolite or kellykettle type option, or a trangia or MSR rocket for really remote treks. But then, we don't do such remoteness....yet

In the past, we've been to places where there were fire-barrels, and plenty of wood, so we could have an open fire too. I would love a fire pit but lots of campsites don't allow open fires.

The BBQ can be surprisingly good and versatile - actual BBQ meats and veggies on skewers etc, but loads of things can be parceled up in foil and cooked on top, or into the coals (like baked potatoes). My Cubs even cooked cake this way in the Scout Den (in foil, on the edges of a wood fire, so the side of BBQ would work well). Or you could use the BBQ to put (cooking) pots on top, like an open fire, to make use of the heat while it gets going to the "white coals" for direct cooking on.

I also have a small solid fuel stove for emergencies - the kind that you take backpacking. It's not great but it will heat water for a brew while waiting to get other things organized.

We use a one of these it's really efficient. Plus it's easy to clean or repair

Have just upgraded to EHU so have bought a portable induction hob.
Have tried it in the house, I am gob smacked at how fast it is!

We also have an electric frying pan too which is really versatile.

We've just our 'test camp' using 2 suitcase stoves with the butane gas -.which were fine but used 3 full cans for 2 nights! And it took hours to boil our kettle. We did hotdogs, pancakes, filled pasta and bacon sarnies so nothing too complicated!

What was I doing wrong? Or are these just known to be crap? How do you store / fill / transport the petrol ones??

We use meths mostly, from tiny little burners to a trangia and a heat pal (which we use as a heater). If I am cooking a curry I use all three at once.

We have got a Dutch oven but are usually knackered and hungry when we get back to our tent so rarely use it away, we do use it in our fire pit at home though.

BarchesterFlowers · 16/04/2017 21:50

this is one of the tiny ones 3" x 1". We are always prepared 😂, can always whip up a cup of tea on a walk but it cooks a pan of rice for three well enough.

We use the large one of this and a single gas burner for emergency cuppa in the mornings before the fire is lit! We bought the grill 7 years ago and it's still going strong.

I splashed out on a Cadac Carri Chef 2 last year and it's fantastic. It is a bit pricey but I researched all the various camping outlets on-line for the cheapest. It comes with several different cooking surfaces... pizza stone, griddle, chef pan, BBQ, paella pan, deep cooking pan for roasts. I started with just two cooking surfaces but have since bought another two. You can also just use the burner for boiling water or cooking in a wok or saucepan. During the summer, I have it set up in the garden as a gas BBQ - it's massive. I've also bought a quick release valve so that when we go camping, we can dismantle it (very quickly) and use it with small gas canisters rather than the big one we have in the garden. We took it to France last year and used it outside every day even though we were staying in a chalet.

The only downsides are that it is massive and expensive. You can get smaller versions and you can get them secondhand on Gumtree or Ebay. You can also have a look on YouTube to see it in action.

I must try the cadac safari that came with our last Motorhome. It looked so big we have never taken it out the bag but must give it a go in the garden.
We use a Lotus Grill for instant charcoal BBQ and a Coleman accelerate 2 ring burner for cooking outside the van.

@Milliways can I ask, how are you finding the lotus grill? Deliberating between one of these or the Cobb, which seems more versatile. We've got a 2 ring burner in our camper.

I have a trangia for lightweight camping, and for boiling water etc when I take my big tent, and a cadac safari chef which I love, it has a griddle, a big pan and a flat plate.

Report
Milliways · 21/04/2017 17:18

@NannyR we love the lotus grill. We only have to take a small increments cream tub sized pot of charcoal with us as it uses so little, and you can have it on any table (even plastic) as the outside stays cool.
Downsides are it's not large, but for 2 of us it's fine, so for 2 steaks and some halloumi or sausages. 4 burgers is fine. DH says it doesn't cook as hot as a conventional BBQ but it's so quick to get going that makes up for it. It travels under the bed in our camper so less bulky than other systems.
