.... and a few weeks to mooch around Europe this summer, where would you go? I'd really like to do a bit of a tour, with some sightseeing and just some beaches/countryside mixed in, but not too much driving (if that makes any sense).

We are going to Italy for 3 weeks and including Milan, Florence, Pisa, Lake Como and Genova. We have booked a range of sites from tiny to huge with all the facilities you would get with a hotel. It is a long drive (12ish hours) but split over 2 days we think it is worth it for sunshine. I have had too many rainy camping holidays in the north of France. Interested to read about other trips to give us more ideas for the future.

I do love Italy. We have done a few static holidays in Tuscany. 12 hours drive you reckon? Is that from the tunnel? We live up north so are four hours from the channel ports before we even start.

Why don't you get the 24hr ferry across to Santander or Bilbao and explore Spain? The Cantabrian coast is beautiful!

Twelve hours from Calais to Milan. We live really close to the tunnel which saves time. Really fancy Spain next but will see how Italy goes!

*Bella we have done those crossings a few times in recent years, but gone along the coast to Biarritz and Bayonne. It's an idea though Thankyou.

The ferry from Portsmouth to Spain is an obscene amount of money when you take a caravan!

I think you have to look at it as part of the holiday Smith. It's not so bad if you factor in six lots of flights and car hire. Plus, of course your accommodation is cheaper.

Yes six flights is a big difference to us - we'd be 4. We worked out a package holiday to the same region of Spain would be cheaper than the ferry option.

With four kids, packages have never been a good option for us.

We live in Switzerland and are coming to UK with our caravan this year but I recommend : normandy -great beaches and history not to be missed (there are loads of campsites), Paris (can't remember which campsite but can check if you are interested) Switzerland (check TCS campsite in geneva, campofelice is a bigger site on lago maggiore) , brigerbad (thermal baths and in the mountains) . Italy (Lago d'idro is a lovely lake north of Lake garda and much less touristy). Germany -great country to visit we went to hopfensee -castle of neuschwanstein is worth visiting. Loads of camping on the beaches around Venice. Lac d'annecy in france is also a lovely place. Depends what you want....

We'll be going camping (without caravan just a tent) southern Germany, Austria and/or Switzerland next summer. I've traveled in that area before and I couldn't believe how beautiful it is there!
