Hello :)
We are planning a trip to Efteling next May half term. The plan is to take the ferry or tunnel to Calais, drive up to Efteling and spend the first weekend there in the self catering village. Rather than head straight home we thought we would then camp for the remainder of the week. Ideally we would head back towards France taking in the sights on the way. I have no idea where to start looking though!
Zeeland and Bruges look worth investigating...we like exploring and beaches. A pool onsite would be nice but not essential, clean showers and electric hookups are however must haves. We don't like huge resort type sites generally, and after a weekend in a theme park a place to chill out a bit appeals rather than somewhere like Durinell. Does anyone have any recommendations for either specific sites or areas? Thank you in advance :)

Bruges is lovely and we camped at Camping Memling, which is walkable to Bruges centre. A cycle path also runs the whole route. Campsite is simple but next to a wood/park which is great for kids. Loo/shower block was fab and wifi was free.

Also recommend a visit to Ypres if you get the chance, another good campsite their also walkable.

(Only site we have done in Netherlands was to visit Amsterdam)

We think The ferry to Dunkirk is better than Calais as gets you closer and less traffic.

We spent a week at de Lisle Bergen which has a swimming pond rather than a pool. The site has fantastic play areas and lots of cycle paths in a pine forest. Kids loved it and we're returning next year for a few days with a week at Duinrell as well.

We went to Brussels and Antwerp by train from a small station with free parking not far from the site.

We stayed in de lisle Bergen too - lovely site but a fair bit of rain the two weeks we were there. We camped and our pitch was nice, under trees but because weather was cool, a pitch out of the trees would have been a bit warmer. Good kids activities, most were free or only a few euro. Lovely site, large but we really enjoyed it. Close to Antwerp and also Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The lake thing is great, the kids part has play equipment part in and out of the water, really fun. They had little chalets and a few wigwams too. Little shop for essentials and supermarkets nearby. Loads of nice cycle ways.

De Efteling is brilliant! We stayed in an apartment (Boskrik or something like that). Great park, lovely accommodation. Bunks for the three kids, living/kitchen room with our double bed in one area and separate bathroom. There is a pool but we didn't use it. The chalets looked lovely, set around a lake. Pretty decent food, even the fast food type was nice. The park rides were good, our young children enjoyed them and the fairytale forest was great! Super clean ( with bins that say 'papier hier' and you feed rubbish into their mouths). - very exciting for small children Smile. Enjoy
