How windy is too windy?

Had to abandon a group camping trip. Wind before we set off was forcast to be 20mph.

Was maybe a bit more than that on arrival and tent pitching was a bit tricky but we weren't worried. Sat outside that afternoon, wind picked up by the evening.

Nobody slept hardly at all that night. Kept having to go out and repeg tents and my caravan awning. Next day everyone else in the campsite left including some people who dumped their broken tent (poles had snapped).

Wind had been over 35mph all night and was still about 30mph. That was average speed, there were stronger gusts going through. We sat in the campsite all day as we were worried the tents would blow away.

Endured another night of wind speeds of 30mph and one tent had a guy rope snap in two. Wind was forcast to stay around 30mph for the next two days so we came home. It was a nightmare getting the tents down.

What wind speeds would you not contemplate going camping at?

That does sound windy. I think I would go home if I was worried the tent would blow away. Having said that, as a child we went camping in the Isle of Wight in gale force 8/9 winds. My dad used all his scouting tricks to keep our tent water proof and on the ground. I remember seeing buckled tents and blown over caravans. We were young and didn't understand. To us it was a great holiday.

My caravan was rocking a lot!

I think we worked out it was storm force 7 which sounds a lot!

I weighted my awning down with concrete blocks which I think saved it. I wanted to take the awning down but by the time I realised this it was too windy to risk taking it down!
