Towing a caravan from Lake Garda to Switzerland

This summer we are staying in Lake Garda then plan on a week in the Black Forest. I'm quite keen though to have a few days in Switzerland in between, the Jung Frau campsite looks amazing. But Im not sure that this will be possible towing a caravan on the windey alpine roads. We could do it by going 8 million miles around but wondered if anyone had done this journey and what you would recommend. Many thanks.

I have done this journey (in reverse) but it was in 1983 when I was a lot younger and more tolerant. Its possible.

thanks fizzy, 'its possible' sounds a bit scary though!

Well we did park on the edge of the black forest and sleep in the caravan. In 1983 this seemed ok but now that I'm an adult I'd have said we were sitting ducks for random opportunist crimes. So if I were to do this now, with my own kids, I'd prefer a place where you can camp officially - where there's some kind of security maybe?

There are main motorways to get you around. For example from Italy you could go through the Gotthard tunnel past Lucerne and over the Brunig to Interlaken without it being too windy, from there you would travel via Bern and Basel back to Germany or go via Austria from Bolzano to Innsbruck over the Brenner pass which isn't particularly high.

thanks very much LIZS, been looking at it today and think we are going to go via Innsbruck and the Brenner pass on the way there and then up through Gottard tunnel on the way back, so that's great to hear you suggesting them, really helpful. Smile
