So how do you tell how much gas you've got left?

And why have they not invented some kind of device which tells you?

How much does a canister cost? Iirc it was £15 to hire the thing and £15 to fill up with gas.

we have a little gague which goes on top of the gas bottle (we use propane) and it does.let you know how much in there. so your wish has come true wink (had ours at least ten years)
will find you a link in a mogrin

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 21:51:13

Ooooh! [excited]

Does it work with calor gas???????

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 21:51:48

ps mmoc psssssttt it's mrs shrek here

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 21:52:12

yes we use with calor

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 21:55:04

Shrek, you have a good memory grin I haven't really been here for a while.

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 21:56:32

we use this in the caravan. if it's not suitable for what you need (presume gas bottle to camp cooker?) then there are lots of those available. Beware, prices vary to a ridiculous level. imho no need for expensive, it's like a tyre gauge on a pipewink

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 21:58:06

Well I never knew that, someone's stolen my idea grin

Thank you. Will have a look at my thing and see if it's suitable.

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 22:05:31

So, we've got a regulator this

I haven't been camping for a while and can't remember how it all works.

If I unscrew the regulator does all the gas come whizzing out or is there a seal?

Does that gauge go between the blue bottle and the regulator? With the gauge sort of sticking out to one side? How does it fit on?

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 22:06:33

Try again blush

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 22:12:29

this is called a meter I think the regulator just erm regulates controls the gas output. there is always a black screw thingy where you turn the gas off to stop it during use. for travelling etc.
we leave the screw stopper thingy out when we have emptied the bottle (so we can tell the empty one from the full one, genius eh) Had to refill ours yesterday. 15kg £19.99 wink

WeAreSeven Mon 19-Aug-13 22:17:29

On campingaz, if you unscrew the regulator the bottle self-seals but there is another little screw-thing that goes in the top of it as well for safety.
Have to say, I was terrified I would do something wrong with the gas cooker and set a spray of burning gas across the whole campsite, obliterating everyone's tents and causing a huge forest fire.....
But luckily even I'm not that bad!

LondonSuperTrooper Mon 19-Aug-13 22:17:33

Is there one for 4.5kg of butane calor gas bottle?

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 22:17:53

if you have a blue bottle ypu need the butane version. assume there is one. we use red gas bottles which are propane. butane doesn't like the cold, red is better for idiot all weather camper/caravanner lunatics people like us grin

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 22:20:44

London I think it's possible, def available for 7&15kg bottles. go checking round the online camp shops? and maybe ebay?
keep in mind the £15 price point - there are plenty around £30+ which are actually the same thing, just beware wink

MrsBottesini Mon 19-Aug-13 22:21:36

omg. I am a Gas Geek shock

WeAreSeven Mon 19-Aug-13 22:26:25

Well, it's not the worst type of geek you could be, Mrs B!grin

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 22:29:03

Ah that meter looks about right.

I've been googling and it turns out we have a calor gas 907. I just can't fathom how to fit the meter between the bottle and the regulator.

You are indeed a gas geek grin [proud]

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 22:31:44

WeAreSeven, yyyy, I'm convinced I'm going to blow myself up if I'm not careful!

MaryMotherOfCheeses Mon 19-Aug-13 22:37:43

Just wish I could work out how to fix the meter to the regulator and the bottle

Can't seem to bring anything up on google images.

NoComet Mon 19-Aug-13 22:46:56

No idea, we have a very primitive gas stove in the kitchen and it always waits until Christmas to run out.

Camping a easy, I have a meths powered trangier grin

WeAreSeven Mon 19-Aug-13 23:14:43

I actually contemplated going out and buying a Trangia in order not to have to use the gas.blush Then asked the guy in the camping shop who was very helpful and told myself that if my parents could do it, I could do it!

Wolfiefan Mon 19-Aug-13 23:19:45

We bought a magnetic strip that goes on the outside of the gas cylinder and indicates level.

Blu Mon 19-Aug-13 23:32:25

The gas lasts ages. I give the bottle a shake, you can hear when there is just a tiny bit left. Ours ran out camping this week but I knew it was v low so had taken our one ring burner that uses an aerosol type cannister as back up.

But I agree, there should be a foolproof system,

MrsBottesini Tue 20-Aug-13 00:10:17

it's on youtube. I saw it earlier blush
