Rats... Am I completely barking mad?

So I love camping and me and ds's have been away camping most years now for the past few years - to 'proper' campsites.

One thing I'd love to do though is some impromptu camping in our back garden as we're lucky it's nice and big and the weather's so bloody unpredictable I figure camping in the back garden on the odd night might work out better than soggy days away!

But I haven't done this so far because I know there are rats around where we live and for some reason I've got it into my head that they're more likely to attack a tent in a back garden than come onto a campsite. .

I know - completely ridiculous but any stories of rat-free camping in gardens would be much appreciated. Or equally horrendous stories about rats at campsites I suppose - as I've never seen one so far..!

Hi, sorry about this. We were camping in Western Scotland in terrible weather and rats came in our tent. Could hear rustling for two.nights. they ate through loads of clothes. This was the first time it had happened in twenty years of camping. It has not put me off camping. The owner of the site was very unhelpful and didn't believe me.

We've just dealt with a rat in our loft and that sent me sleepless for WEEKS! Have you left a review of the site?

AARRRGGHHH!! So my rat-free campsite theory doesn't hold..?! Sigh. If we start getting decent weather I might have to brave it and try for a night in the garden. Any rustling or squeaking though and I'll be back in the house as quick as..! Does anything put them off??
