What time do you start making a noise when camping?

I only ask because the family in the tent next to us started at 5.30 this morning. I understand that young children make noise, but there was no "ssh"ing, in fact the parent were loud, almost shouting at times. I was really pissed off, but as we were leaving today I didn't bother to say anything. Now I'm wondering if I was being selfish in thinking they shouldn't camp with a baby and 3 little children if they can't keep quiet?

views are quite divided about this on here. ours is that we go on holiday to relax and re-juvinate, not get woken up several hours before we would if we were working. So I'd say any time after 8am, ideally not till 9am though. last summer we got woken at 6.30am by some selfish pigs over the other side of the area shouting at 6.30am. people just don't seem to realise how far the noise travels or they just don't care. I am always tempted to complain if there's a quiet policy, but my husband will never let me.

Some posters here seem to think its ok if its a family site and you should expect this. one said i should go to an adults only - bit tricky when you have 3 kids who also hate being woken. I bet the early risers would be first to complain if someone kept them awake for 3 hours after normal bedtime - say 2pm

IMO from 7 is quiet time in tent and after 8 is ok to turn the volume up.

Have been most pissed off with other families in the past, from loud Dad shouting the rules of snakes and ladders at 0530 to family allowing baby to cry all night then singing 'Twinkle' at 0530...ffs, we just use inside voices, normally DD is so worn out she doesn't stir before 10, but when I can hear shit over my earplugs, I take offence!

Before 0800 I would certainly not use a voice any louder than one that could only be heard inside my tent, and even then until 0900, I would keep the radio down a bit more etc if it was clear that one or more of my neighbours didn't get up before 0800.

Some people just don't have a chuffin' clue!!!

Mine get up at 6.30am. They are 2,4,7. From then on it's "mummy I'm hungry, need toilet, she called me a stinky poo poo head, want beach! Want beach!(toddler) etc etc

What can I do? Gag them and tie them to the tent pole? Not go camping (the only 'holiday' we can afford right now?)

But we don't complain about night time noise either.

norman - you should take them for a walk away from the tents. or park your car near the entrance so you can bundle them into that and take them away till 8am. why should everyone's else's holidays be ruined? this is especially the case if there are rules about quiet periods.

how would you feel if my dog barked all night?

So every morning we bundle the kids into the car and drive around? Try to pitch near the gate? Shock

I think when camping you have to accept there is going to be noise. We don't complain about the family in the mega tent with the generator, microwave, older kids running about shouting in the late evening.
We usually camp in Scotland and most sites seem to stick young families together.

And my kids are not noisy at all in the night- they are asleep from 8pm.

Quiet time is between 11pm and 7pm imo on a campsite.

TBH we read stories/ draw pictures/ wander off to the toilet before 7am when camping, they do not run about outside, they are not allowed to shout (although it happens)

But I'd say after 7.30am when cooking breakfastit gets tricky to keep them quiet.

7am quiet time, inside tent quiet voices till 8am.

My DS used to wake really early (6ish) when we camped and DH used to get him in the car, have a little drive around, see if he could get a paper anywhere and a coffee then come back at a more suitable hour

I agree hushed voices till 7, preferably 8 (i'm an early riser and am normally walking the dog at 6). Luckily one DS is an early riser too but very quiet and other sleeps till 9 no matter what is going on outside.

But i really wouldnt want to hear cars starting up and driving off early in the morning either!

I think it's important to make every effort to get kids to be as quiet as possible before 7.

Have drink and snack ready to offer immediately, and books for them to look at.

It gets so light, I would have thought that anyone who can sleep in the light can also sleep through a little bit of noise?

First time away with my eldest, when she was 18 months, I stuck her in the back-pack and went for a walk every morning. She was waking around 6.30 and we were off before 7. Who are we to ruin someone else's holiday lie in?

Now she is 9 and her sister 7, they play quietly and read til we hear children playing outside elsewhere, usually between 8 and half past.

So when the tent next door to you is having a few drinks and shreiking until gone midnight keeping us awake its not acceptable to let my DD who wakes at 5:30-6am to maybe talk just a little bit louder to get our own back????

Report
gapants · 17/08/2011 21:03

ilove I think that attitude is rather spiteful and unhelpful. If you are bothered by late night noise, then you should pick a campsite that has a quiet eve policy and that enforces it. Most CCC ones do, and you can always enquire when you book.

If you are faced by noise, ask them to keep is down, then get the camp managers on the case. I have seen campers moved off site for their rowdy behaviour.

Jeez this is why I dont camp in busy campsites
Too much aggro
Can't those with waking babies at 5.30 and those with teens who want to sleep in til midday and party til midnight camp in a field somewhere?!

Report
dreamingofsun · 17/08/2011 22:16

I agree with gapants about iloved's attitude. We try to be considerate to our neighbours and don't make noise 11-9. To have one family keeping us awake late at night and then another early in the morning ....you'd get no sleep at all and just be grouchy the whole holiday.

Waking at 5.30am is at least 2.5 hours before most people get up - so the late nightequivalent time would be 1.30pm

Shoutymomma · 17/08/2011 22:23

I remember an occasion where we were still up drinking late and had a massive laugh that caused the lady in the next tent to come out and ask us to pipe down. I reckon it was about 11.30pm We were all embarrassed and us guilty ones were appropriately sorry. It's all about attitudes, I guess.

Incidentally, most sites we go to have a 'no noise after 11pm' policy, but I don't remember seeing a 'no noise before (time)' sign anywhere. Interesting...

I think minimal nosie after 11, definatly no noise by 12 and keep children quiet and in the tent til 8 with the exception of a quick wee if required. Why should everyone else be woken early on their holiday. A peice of fruit will sustain them in the tent until 'proper' breakfast preperations can begin. My dc are 5 and 6 and we have always keot them in the tent until 8.

I kinda expect children noises to be gone by 10pm.... And adult noises by 11. Only zips and flip-flops before 7... And quiet murmurings before 8.

About to go on my first camping trip with my children. (DD nearly 3 and DS just turned 1). They wake between 5am - 5.30am, I expect they'll wake earlier in the tent. We did a dummy run in the garden a couple of months back and DH and I only got 2 hours sleep as the kids were up ALL night. When I did the dummy run my DH and I took it in turns to push our DS in the buggy. Thing is my DH can't join us till late Friday so I'll be on my own with the kids. I'm expecting A LOT of noise from them. We are only camping Thur-sat nights and the forecast is rain so hopefully it'll drown out the sound of them. Don't mean to wreck other's holidays.

monkey -where are you going? fingers crossed its a different county to us!!! If you are expecting a lot of noise that disrupts other campers early in the morning you shouldn't be going. If are on the pitch next to me and make a lot of noise throughout the night, or wake me at 5am i will complain to the campsite owners
