How can I tell the gas has run out (without waiting for the flames to go out!)

What is says in the title really...

Lakeland has some magnetic gadget you can stick to the outside that claims to tell you when it is empty but all the reviews bar 1 are dire.

It is years since we have had a new bottlebut had a big spell with no camping when the boys were little. Don't want to spoil the upcoming trip with gas that runs out though!

Help!

Are you going to somewhere very remote Yellow?

(you have probably said on the campfire thread but I have a terrible memory sorry)

We always wait until it just runs out [tight]. When it does then that's when we go out for lunch or dinner Grin. Have never had a problem finding replacement bottles. Lots of campsites have them, as do garages.

Not that remote. Fisherground campsite in Eskdale. I'd be really p*ssed off if it died a death mid cook! Although there is a pub within walking distance so we'd not starve!

ooh we've stayed in the campsite next one along from Fisherground

The pub (the one set back into eskdale not the one next to the steam train station) does great food. Leave the gas behind and just eat out at that pub.

Fisherground is pretty big. Do they stock gas bottles? If not then, mmm it would be a giant PITA if you ran out mid cook.

My method of testing is to give the bottle a swish. if I can swish the gas then, er, there's gas in it.

Good to hear that the pub does great food! Happy days! Not so sure about the swishing of the gas though Grin

Dhs view is if we run out so what? Me, I like my cooking and it would p*ss me right off!

Hi Yellow,

One thought, why don't you get a travel suitcase weighing thingy - I'm sure somewhere on Google you can get the weight of an empty gas bottle.

At least then you've got a thingy that's useful for other things too!

OK so I've done te swishing and the weighing and I'm happy that it is about half full - happy days! Can't really cope with having to have a spare though...

How long are they supposed to last for does anyone know?

Don't really know why I was so suspicious of the swishing!!!

What about taking a single gas burner, too? We always take one to boil the water on during stops on the journey. You could always use that to finish off your dinner in an emergency.
