Calorie-counting

Low calorie alcoholic drinks - good idea?

Hello everyone!

I wonder if you might be able to help me – I’m in the process of working out whether to pursue an idea of mine, which is to set up my very own business of low calorie alcoholic drinks.

I’ve got very into my nutrition and try and stick to a low-calorie, healthy diet where possible – but I find my biggest weakness is when it comes to a cocktail or a glass of wine...

It got me thinking that if there were a brand out there that I could trust to be the lowest calorie option, and that I knew I could have without wrecking my diet, I’d definitely be interested in giving it a try… There doesn’t seem to be anything out there on the UK market at the moment (which I’m amazed by).

But before I take this much further, I wanted to get honest opinions from women that weren't friends and family!

Would you be interested in buying low calorie alcoholic drinks, such as cocktails and wines? Would it be make a difference if these drinks were also sugar free? Would it make a difference if these drinks were all natural (e.g. sweetened by stevia or a similar natural sweetener)?

Thank you SO much in advance – sorry if this isn't the right place to post this - I just thought it was worth a shot to see what people thought!

B xxx

Bring it on!

But there are some low-cal drinks out there, they are mostly low alcohol (not as fun!) as well, or spirit mixers (cans) with Coke Zero.

I think you're really going to struggle with this - a vodka and slimline tonic is 90kcal, almost all of which comes from the alcohol in the vodka. How are you going to make drinks with fewer calories than alcohol is in itself?

I'd be pro a glass of wine which I absolutely knew the calorie count for!!

I would definitely be interested in low calorie wine, provided that the alcohol content was the same as normal. Judging by the fact that the current available low calorie wines are also low alcohol I'm guessing this isn't possible.

Weight watchers do a lower calories wine - it has less alcohol though so that's why. There are also light beers and ciders already which are lower calories and as pp said spirits with slimline mixers. So plenty of competition!

And yes the calories come from the alcohol mostly so how would you be proposing making the drinks low calorie?

Do you actually have a product in mind?

How do you get low calorie, with normal ABV?

I'd love to find a lower calorie alternative for cocktails,I don't buy the ones available at the moment because the added sugar is ridiculously high.

I'd expect it to be "not as nice as the real thing", in the case of wine or beer, and "completely pointless" in the case of mixed drinks when I know I can have spirits and diet mixers anyway.

I'd be very much in favour of drinks being labelled with their calorie content, but that's not a business idea.

I honestly don't trust such drinks. I don't think they are worth it and am sure that if I can do without alcohol, then I can do without these things as well.

When I was on diet, I usually just stick to Gin & Slimline tonic, the least calories mixed drink I can find.

If someone did a low-calorie crisp, dry white wine they'd make millions.

Low-cal wine just tastes like Ribena.

How would you compete with vodka?

I would love low calorie wine!

I would love this, but is it realistic? Since gram for gram alcohol contains almost as many calories as fat? Is there a way of lowering that? Vodka or gin and a diet mixer is about as low as one can get I think. Maybe if you were to invent a cider or beer with less added sugar ?

Alcohol has a lot of calories, about 55 per unit. That already makes up most of the calorie count in a lot of alcoholic drinks, so I'm not sure where you would cut the corners, for what would still be a fairly high calorie product.
