We were chicken I'm afraid, made a sponge, covered it with roll out icing, and a cut-out dinosaur in a contrasting colour on top. 3 yr old was happy. 5 yr old was so impressed he demanded the same for his 6th. Result!

Or a dinosaur island lump shaped cake with green or choc buttercream icing, trees and plastic dinos on top?

Disclaimer, we're not good at cakes, but practiced at inventing easy ways to do themes well enough to keep small children happy.

I bought sugar dinosaurs from ebay and made a volcano cake so it was a basically a big pile of chocolate cake with yellow and red icing drizzled down the sides of the mountain for lava and I stood the dinosaurs around. Dd seemed to like it anyway!

If you were feeling creative, have you seen those tutorials for having a number running through a loaf cake? like this? You could use the lakeland moulds (we have them, they are good) to make dinosaurs running through the cake maybe?
