DD2 is now 5 wks and 2 days old and i'm still finding breastfeeding really confusing. i'm always battling with the following issues:

  1. how do i know she is still hungry after a feed
  2. how do i know when my breasts are empty
  3. trying to do single-side feeding but she will also take the other breast too
  4. DD2 seems to be using me as a dummy today and just falling asleep on the breast, but she has been able to get herself to sleep the past 2 days with a dummy....
  5. could she be having a groth spurt??? can she want more if she is just falling asleep after 2 mins on breast??

when will the confusion stop and are there any 'simple' rules that can help me understand what DD2 wants more....

  1. let her end the feed, usually dd3 pops off and wont re-latch

2. your breasts are never empty

3. what do you mean qabout single side? always try to offer both breasts each feed.

4. does it worry you? its a bit humid today, maybe she is a bit thirsty but not hungry IYKWIM.

5. growth spurt is entirly possible.

  1. how do i know she is still hungry after a feed

I'll do my bst till better comes along!
I always found that dd would fall asleep at this age so stop feeding or stop herself and simply not want anymore.

  2. how do i know when my breasts are empty

Breast are never empty! Only nearly.

  3. trying to do single-side feeding but she will also take the other breast too

that's fine. Just feed from one side and at end offer other boob. Ive only ever fed from one side at a time until dd was much older and decided to change herself.

  4. DD2 seems to be using me as a dummy today and just falling asleep on the breast, but she has been able to get herself to sleep the past 2 days with a dummy....

I wouldnt worry at this age about falling asleeo on the breast. Perhaps she'll take to a dummy or if not continue to use you. At least at night you dont have to worry about her losing your breast!

Growth spurt - 6 weeks is a typical time for a growth spurt.

Personally I never bothered with a dummy and just offered the breast whenever she wanted it. However I've nothing against dummies and she might be a particularily sucky baby and might take to a dummy eventually.

THe first 6 weeks are the hardest!

Only a tiny bit of help here - ds is 11 weeks and I'm still not sure of the answers to all the questions.

On whether your breasts are empty, I've thought quite a few times that mine must be, as ds pulled away or started to grizzle. But every time whe I tried to hand express - I'm not very good at it, but can do it for a few seconds - there was always something left. Maybe it was harder to get to, though?

On single side feeding, I have been trying from the start and have probably had about ten feeds all told where ds hasn't also wanted at least a few minutes from the other breast.

On using the breast as a dummy, I've tried to just be relaxed about it and regard it as bonding time (hope that doesn't sound too precious) but it did mean that it was about 9 weeks before I stopped getting sore nipples, as ds was on the breast for 6 to 8 hours a day.

Think that around 6 weeks is growth spurt time for a lot of babies.

On the being hungry question, I wish I knew! I do know from trial and error that when I "overfeed" ds - e.g. when he's grizzly and won't seem to settle he seems to bring it back up (not spectacularly but gently) and so I know that he won't take more than he needs. So I work on the basis that he will cry if he is hungry and if I overfeed him a bit because I feed him in response to a cry that wasn't hunger, it isn't the end of the world.

Sorry - bit long. hth.

oops - sorry but the milk there is not more difficult to get to. How would that work??

Breastfeeding works on supply and demand and the baby feeding stimulates more milk to be produced. DD can feed for ages sometimes, stop for 10 minutes and decide to have another mammoth feed. You really dont need to wait.

i suspect DD2 is also lazy and seems not to want breast after the inital 10-15 mins - probably because the flow is really fast then....
