I have breast fed all my kids (3 of them) and all have thrived but been tiddley really with very small weight gains.

Dd is over a year and in 3-6 (coming into_ 6-9m clothes

I have always had loads of milk.

But is it that my milk is literally no fat milk or something?

How do the big weight gain bf babies put on so much is it that their mums milk has more fat in it Is that poss even?

Nah they are just genetically predisposed to it. My family are huge, my babies start out small and grow fast. Don't worry about it.

It's just the way your babies are - the fact that they are all tiddly says that that is their natural growth pattern.

My DS gained loads, but he was a guzzler, fed lots (inc night), and didn't crawl till he was just under 1, so wasn't expending lots of energy

I should think the size of your babies is more to do with your size and the size of their father.

FWIW, I think a lot of clothes are way too big. I had 3 boys who all weighed over 8 lbs at birth (and a dd who weighed just under 7 lbs) and they rarely fitted the clothes suppossedly for their age.

strange thing is tho I am 4ft 11, hubby 5 ft 7 maybe so small people but I bred a nearly 9lb daughter I was as wide as I was tall

I blame the can of irn bru I had to have at 3pm daily

Ironically us mums to the fatter babies feel bad for having fat babies and get crap from HV about the need to wean early so they don't get 'obese'

Really think its just down to their make up, I have twins 4 months dt2 is a real chubby chops and dt1 is dainty and little, they both are breast fed and if anything dt1 eats more!

Don't be misled by the clothing sizes. I held a 6-9 month t-shirt against a 12-18 and the "smaller" size was significantly bigger. They vary a lot

Mine started off quite big and carried on the same. dd1 is still on the same "centile" but apparently borderline overweight now at age 5 years.

I'd second what WMMC says - both of my boys have shot up from 50th percentile at birth to 98th by about 6 weeks.

When asked how I was feeding them, when I replied that they were ebf that was deemed ok by the hv - what would they have said if I had been ff them? They were obviously genetically programmed to be that size.

I also had lots of - "oh now he's 4 months you can start weaning to give yourself a break" comments from several hv's

DS1 is now 4 and on 75th centile but not at all chubby looking.

DS2 is 16 months and only been walking for 2 months so still distinctly chubby but I have no concerns about future weight problems with either of them.

Genes - that's what it is!

Maybe our genes rather than theirs you mean? So we're genetically predispositioned to make gold top or semi skimmed milk?

It's an interesting idea. I don't know the answer though!

A friend at one of my groups has the teeniest little girl - absolutely beautiful! She is only just out of newborn clothes at 9 weeks and is ebf.

Both her and her husband are quite dinky but she said her DD does not stop eating and she asked about whether her milk is ok etc. She was told provided she is putting some weight on and having wet/dirty nappies there shouldn't be any concern.

Her little one is also one of the happiest lo's I have met - just shows she is getting what she wants and is happy on it. You say your three are thriving and I think that is the key...
