Infant feeding

Breastfed 4 month old, need to get her to poo!

I know this is a terrible topic, but....

My DD hasn't pooed in about a week which I'm told is pretty normal. Problem is that we are due to fly for 12 hours tomorrow evening and I really don't want her to have a big poo explosion on the plane. I have visions of it happening when the seatbelt light is on, and me getting covered in poo and having to sit there for an hour.

Anyone any ideas? I've tried cycling her legs and moving her around, have taken a couple of doses of lactulose myself.

I'm not sure there is anything you can do; not heard that you taking lactulose will help, but on that vein would you taking orange juice or mint or fennel tea help?

do you use cloth or sposies? If cloth you can boost a nappy to cope and coupled with a tight fitting wrap it will keep things contained. If sposies, then get some that have a bit of elastic at the back like huggies or Tesco active fit (although from my expereince with DD who went every four days or so, the only thing that kept it in was a good wrap like tots bots, motherease or nature babies. Or do you know any cloth users who can lend you either a wrap to go over her sposie or a nappy/wrap combo for the trip?

And if it does happen, can you take along a pampers bed mat to cover you while she is sitting on your lap and then change her on your lap? Your nearest neighbours might not be impressed though!

I came in expecting to say 'oh you don't need to, she'll go when she's ready'... but I can see where you're coming from!

I have read that inserting something small into the rectum, eg a rectal thermometer, can help with constipation.. have never done this though. Must be rounded etc and lubricated.

And I dont mean to imply she is constipated, just saying why I've seen it suggested.

On the baby massage course I went on the teacher did warn that massaging their bellies could trigger then to poo. The action was gentle clockwise circles with fingers. Might be worth a try.
Sorry but you taking lactulose will not effect her as it is not absorbed from your gut, so will not get in your milk.

Sorry not got any advice, just to say that the poo explosion did happen to a friend of mine on a plane and she survived! The pampers change mat/bed mat is a good idea, and a plastic bag to contain it in.

warm bath followed by tummy massage in clockwise direction, and doing froggy legs up towards her bum -really helped both DS1 and DS2 (who were exclusively BF and used to go for days without pooing).

Oh in case you cant get her to poo - take change of clothes for yourself and 2 for her and put her on a jumper on your lap - should protect you incase a poonami ensues...

sorry, i had to snigger. am just imagining your dd having a lovely calm poo-less flight.

and you stuck in the loo cos of all the lactulose!

sorry. in all seriousness i really don't think ther'es much more you an do. she'll go when she's good and ready and i'm not sure it's a good idea to start trying to force it!

poonami! love it. especially as we were on tsunami alert here yesterday.

I'll try the circular massage when she is next up. And may go get some of those outer pants as well. We're going to take changes of clothes for us anyway. Going to be travelling for three days.

Do you think there is any point in me taking her to the GP? I could probably get an appointment today.

lol at poonami . My DD did one in the carseat on a long journey once; it was NOT pretty, but at least it was fairly contained!

How long does she usually go between poos? Is this the longest? could she actually be a bit constipated? If so then I'm sure the doc could give you something for it.

Thinking about it, it's bound to happen on take off, when the air in her gut expands. Brilliant.

She normally goes up to a week, this is the longest.

Poonami! DD was finally gone. I tried everything suggested (apart from putting something up her bum which seemed a bit scary). Also gave her a little brown sugar in boiled water as suggested by a pal. And about 4 hours later problem solved.

I probably wouldn't give her this normally/regularly but as a one off it should be okay.

I'm just back in NZ after our trip. DD was great- no poo explosions on planes thank goodness and she slept most of the way. Jetlag now is another issue. Boy am I suffering.

Anyway thought you guys might find this ad amusing:

I haven't tried these yet so can't comment on how effective it is!
